Sailing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – 49er FX
The women 49er (dinghy), 49er FX was a sailing event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and took place between 27 July and 3 August. The defending champions, Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze from Brazil at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Brazil, won the event. Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke from Germany at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Germany were the second, and Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz from the Netherlands at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Netherlands won the bronze medal. For Lutz, Beucke, Bekkring, and Duetz this was the first Olympic medal. The medal race was originally scheduled for 2 August, but had to be postponed due to the lack of wind. Before the medal race, which costs twice as many points as every other race, Grael and Kunze were tied with Bekkering and Duetz for the first place, and Lutz and Beucke were in the third position. Anouk Geurts (3 April 2000) is a Belgian sailor. She has competed in the 49 FX class at the 2020 Summer Olympics together with Isaura Maenhaut. Career Geurts started her career in the small Optimist class at the age of 10. She then progressed to the Laser 4.7 class, where she became Belgian and European champion in 2016. Having been on different Nacra 17 crews as part of a project in the run-up for the 2020 Summer Olympics, Geurts and Maenhaut were finally put together in 2018 in the 49er FX class after the Nacra 17 project was stopped because of several injuries. They finished 31st at the 2020 World Championships and secured their Olympic ticket for Tokyo at the 2021 Lanzarote sailing competition. They finished 14th in Tokyo. Molly Meech (born 31 March 1993) is a New Zealand sailor. Meech won the 49er & 49er FX World Championships, 2013 49er FX World Championship and a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics alongside Alex Maloney. During the 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup, Meech and Maloney competed in the women's 49er FX competitions, winning in Miami and coming second in Weymouth. Margaret "Maggie" Shea ( ; born July 13, 1989) is an American sailor who is a Pan American Games medallist and a two-time medallist in the World Championships. Career After graduating from Connecticut College, where she led the Camels to a second-place finish in the 2011 ISCA Women's Finals, Shea dedicated herself to professional sports, being one of the founders of the Epic Racing team, in the Match Race category. Rui Qi "Cecilia" Low (born 1 April 1991) is a Singaporean sailor. She competed in the 49er FX event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Sailing career In 2016, Low and her teammate, Kimberly Lim, participated in the Sailing World Cup in the 49erFX class but without much success, coming in at 8th at Hyeres and 12th at Miami. With a new coach, Fernando Kuo, Lim and Low came in third at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía sailing regatta held at Palma de Mallorca, Spain in 2017. Sailing the 49er FX, her achievements include two gold medals at the European championships, a silver medal at the world championships, and a fourth place and seventh place at the Olympic Games.
