Safonovo (russian: Сафо́ново) is a town and the administrative center of Safonovsky District in Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Vopets River northeast of Smolensk, the administrative center of the oblast. Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft, brown, combustible, sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat.
