Sabritas
Papa Sabritas is a Mexican snacks company. They are best known for manufacturing chips. History Sabritas was founded in 1943 by Pedro Antonio Marcos Noriega as Golosinas y Productos Selectos in Mexico City. It produced and sold potato chips, corn chips and snacks, and relied on a small distribution network which was mostly bicycle-based. The name is a portmanteau of Sabrosas y Fritas, which means Tasty and Fried (or Fried ones) in Spanish. In 1966, a year after Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola Company merged to form Pepsico, Sabritas was bought out. It started modernizing its processes and expanding its retail channel. In 2000, Sabritas made taco shells that inadvertently contained Starlink, a genetically modified corn that was not approved for human consumption. The contaminated flour was supplied by a mill in Texas. The shells were made on behalf of Kraft, which distributed them in Taco Bell-branded packages to supermarkets; Kraft recalled the taco shells when the Starlink was ... Tazos
Tazos are disks that were distributed as promotional items with products of Frito-Lay and its subsidiaries around the world. The idea behind Tazos started out similar to Pogs, whereby each Tazo contained a score value, and a game was played to 'win' Tazos from other players. Tazos have been released in several different formats, ranging from the original circular disks, to octagonal disks, and in later years, to resemble more of a collectible card. In addition to the Japanese Pog Battle game, some Tazo series feature small incisions around the outside, allowing players to fit them together and build objects. The ''Star Wars'' series also included additional pieces which allowed players to construct spaceships. Tazos are commonly made from a plastic base, but some series have been produced from cardboard or aluminium (such as the Australian ''Yu-Gi-Oh!'' Metallix series). Tazos series Tazos started out with a set of 100 disks featuring the images of ''Looney Tunes'' characters a ... StarLink Corn Recall
The StarLink corn recalls occurred in the autumn of 2000, when over 300 food products were found to contain a genetically modified corn that had not been approved for human consumption. It was the first-ever recall of a genetically modified food. The anti-GMO activist coalition Genetically Engineered Food Alert, which detected and first reported the contamination, was critical of the FDA for not doing its job. The recall of Taco Bell-branded taco shells, manufactured by Kraft Foods and sold in supermarkets, was the most publicized of the recalls. One settlement resulted in $60 million going to Taco Bell franchisees for lost sales due to the damage to the Taco Bell brand. StarLink corn StarLink is a brand of genetically modified maize containing two modifications: a gene for resistance to glufosinate, and a variant of the ''Bacillus thuringiensis'' (Bt) protein called Cry9C. Cry9C had not been used in a GM crop prior to StarLink, causing heightened regulatory scrutiny.Department ... Latin American Debt Crisis
The Latin American debt crisis ( es, Crisis de la deuda latinoamericana; pt, Crise da dívida latino-americana) was a financial crisis that originated in the early 1980s (and for some countries starting in the 1970s), often known as ''La Década Perdida'' (The Lost Decade), when Latin American countries reached a point where their foreign debt exceeded their earning power, and they were not able to repay it. Origins In the 1960s and 1970s, many Latin American countries, notably Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, borrowed huge sums of money from international creditors for industrialization, especially infrastructure programs. These countries had soaring economies at the time, so the creditors were happy to provide loans. Initially, developing countries typically garnered loans through public routes like the World Bank. After 1973, private banks had an influx of funds from oil-rich countries which believed that sovereign debt was a safe investment. Mexico borrowed against future ...
