SS Vernon L. Kellogg
SS ''Vernon L. Kellogg'' was an American Liberty ship built in 1943 for service in World War II. Her namesake was Vernon Lyman Kellogg, an American entomologist, evolutionary biologist, and science administrator. Design Like other Liberty ships, she was long and wide, carried 9000 tons of cargo and had a top speed of . Most Liberty ships were named after prominent deceased Americans. Construction and career The keel of the ship was laid on June 20, 1943. Only 25 days later the California Shipbuilding Corp. Launched (ship), launched in Los Angeles under the name ''Vernon L. Kellogg'' with hull number 224. Only 13 days later, on July 28, 1943, the vehicle was operational and was taken over by the War Shipping Administration, Los Angeles, and taken over by Grace Line Incorporated, Grace Line brought into motion. The War Shipping Administration (WSA) was a World War II emergency war agency of the US government, tasked to purchase and operate the civilian shipping tonnage the United States needed for fighting the war. Both shipbuilding under the Maritime Commission and ship allocation under the WSA to Army, Navy or civilian needs were closely coordinated though Vice Admiral Emory S. Land who continued as head of the Maritime Commission while also heading the WSA. Zur See is a 9-part television series, produced by the GDR television from 1974 to 1976. It covers the journey of the German Sea Seafarers' Training and Freightship, J. G. Fichte from Rostock to Havana. Many prominent actors of the GDR had been committed to this series for the main roles. Horst Drinda, Günter Naumann, Günter Schubert and Erik S. Klein were among the most popular actors of their time. The series became one of the most successful and most-watched productions on the GDR television. Greifswalder Oie
Greifswalder Oie (literally "Greifswald's isle") is a small island in the Baltic Sea, located east of Rügen on the German coast. The island covers an area of about 54 hectares. The isle forms part of the municipality of Kröslin. Geography The Greifswalder Oie is about 1,550 metres long, a maximum of 570 metres wide and, at the cliffs on its eastern side, a maximum of 19 metres high. It is about 12 kilometres off the shore of Usedom and belongs administratively to the municipality of Kröslin on the mainland. On the island, with its striking steep coast, is a 49 metre high lighthouse with one of the strongest beacons in the Baltic. The whole island is a nature reserve.
