SS Rotterdam
The fifth SS ''Rotterdam'', also known as "The Grande Dame", is a former ocean liner and cruise ship, and has been a hotel ship in Rotterdam, Netherlands since 2010. She was launched by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in a gala ceremony on 13 September 1958, and was completed the following summer. The ''Rotterdam'' was the last great Dutch "ship of state", employing the finest artisans from the Netherlands in her construction and fitting out process. Her career spanned forty-one years. She sailed from 1959 until her final retirement in September 2000. Concept and design Originally she was conceived as a running mate to the popular launched in 1937, but work was put on hold at the outbreak of World War II in Europe. MS ''Melody'' was a cruise ship, formerly owned and operated by MSC Cruises. She was built in 1982 by the CNIM shipyard in La Seyne, France for Home Lines as ''Atlantic''. Between 1988 and 1997 she sailed for Premier Cruise Line as ''StarShip Atlantic''. In 1997, the vessel entered service for MSC Cruises as ''Melody.'' Hotel New York (Rotterdam)
Hotel New York is a hotel in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, based in the former office building of the Holland America Lines (Nederlandsch Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij). It was used as temporary accommodation for European emigres in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: "Often, package deals were available which would combine a train ticket, hotel accommodation and passage over the oceans." When sailing from Rotterdam to New York was superseded by flying, the building became derelict in the 1980s. It was squatted in 1988. RMS ''Transvaal Castle'' was a British ocean liner built by John Brown & Company at Clydebank for the Union-Castle Line for their mail service between Southampton and Durban. In 1966 she was sold to the South Africa-based Safmarine and renamed ''S.A. Vaal'' for further service on the same route. Following cessation of the service between the UK and South Africa in 1977 the ship was sold to Carnival Cruise Line and rebuilt in Japan as the cruise ship SS ''Festivale'', re-entering service in 1978. Eugenio C
The SS ''Eugenio C'' was a 1966 Italian built ocean liner/cruise ship originally owned by the Costa Line. She was scrapped as the ''Big Red'' at Alang, India in June 2005. History ''Eugenio C'' was ordered for the South American service by Costa (Linea C), to replace the ''Frederico C'' on that route. Her keel was laid on 4 January 1964, with ''Eugenio C'' being delivered to Costa on 22 August 1966, the same day she set out on her maiden trans-Atlantic voyage. For 10 years she only operated trans-Atlantic voyages between Genoa and South America, until passenger loading dropped rapidly in the 1970s, when the ''Eugenio C'' began cruising. SS ''Oceanic'' was a cruise ship built in 1963 by Cantieri Riuniti dell' Adriatico, Monfalcone, Italy for Home Lines. Between 1985 and 2000, she sailed for Premier Cruise Line under the names ''Starship Oceanic'' and ''Big Red Boat I'', before being sold to Pullmantur Cruises and reverting to her original name. SS ''Canberra'' was an ocean liner, which later operated on cruises, in the P&O fleet from 1961 to 1997. She was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland at a cost of £17 million. The ship was named on 17 March 1958, after the federal capital of Australia, Canberra.
