SS Argentina (1958)
SS ''Argentina'' was an ocean liner launched at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, United States in 1958. The ship was the List of passenger ships built in the United States, last ocean liner to be completed in the United States. Sister ship, had been launched in December 1957. Both ships operated in Moore-McCormack's South American service serving ports on the east coasts of North and South America. In 1972 ''Argentina'' was sold to Holland America Lines, Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles, and was renamed ''Veendam'', the third of the line's ships to bear the name. Holland America chartered the ship twice during the time its entities owned the ship during which the ship operated under other names. The first was during 1974-1975 when the ship operated as ''Brasil''. The Moore-McCormack Lines was a series of companies operating as shipping lines, operated by the Moore-McCormack Company, Incorporated, later Moore-McCormack Lines, Incorporated, and simply Mooremack, founded in 1913 in New York City. It ceased trading on its buy-out in 1982. The founders were Albert V. Moore (1880–1953) (director/president) and Emmet J. McCormack (director/treasurer), with Mr Molloy (director/secretary). SS ''Baltic'' was an ocean liner owned and operated by the White Star Line. ''Baltic'' was one of the first four ships ordered by White Star from shipbuilders Harland and Wolff after Thomas Ismay bought the company, and the third of the ships to be delivered. Name Originally, the ship was to be named ''Pacific,'' and was launched under this name, but was changed to ''Baltic'' during her fitting out so as to avoid association with the Collins Liner of the same name, which had vanished with all hands in January 1856. Career On 17 October 1871, ''Baltic'' ran aground on the Jordan Flats, in Liverpool Bay whilst on a voyage from New York to Liverpool, Lancashire. Her passengers were taken off. American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines, New York, was the leading US-flag shipping company between the U.S. east coast and the Mediterranean from 1919 to 1977, offering both cargo ship and passenger ship services, until it declared bankruptcy and was acquired by Farrell Lines of New York.
