SNCAC NC.420
The SNCAC NC-420 was a French observation flying boat built by SNCAC in the 1940s. Development and design The aircraft was developed under a program initiated by the French Navy in March 1937 to replace the aging Loire 130 floatplane. Had it entered service, the fast battleship was to have carried three of the aircraft. The program requested an aircraft that had an endurance of six hours and be able to carry a bomb load. The endurance requirement was later reduced to five hours to save weight. The NC.420 was a twin-engine aircraft, an uncommon arrangement for ship-borne reconnaissance aircraft where a premium was placed on compactness. It could nevertheless be reduced to a width of with the wings folded, which made it comparable in size (and weight) to the Loire 130 it was slated to have replaced. The Loire 130 was a French flying boat that saw service during World War II. It was designed and built by Loire Aviation of St Nazaire. Development The Loire 130 originated from a mid-1930s requirement from the French Navy for a reconnaissance seaplane or flying boat that could also serve aboard French battleships and cruisers. Chosen in 1936 against five competitors ( Bréguet 610, Gourdou-Leseurre GL-820 HY, Levasseur PL.200, Potez CAMS 120), the Loire 130's performance was deemed to be good and production orders for 150 of the machines were placed. It entered production in 1937 and replaced most shipborne seaplanes and flying boats already in service. Fast Battleship
A fast battleship was a battleship which emphasised speed without – in concept – undue compromise of either armor or armament. Most of the early World War I-era dreadnought battleships were typically built with low design speeds, so the term "fast battleship" is applied to a design which is considerably faster. The extra speed of a fast battleship was normally required to allow the vessel to carry out additional roles besides taking part in the line of battle, such as escorting aircraft carriers.
