SLNS Ranaviru
SLNS ''Ranaviru'' (''Ranaviru'', in Sinhalese: Warrior) was a Shanghai-class fast gun boat of the Sri Lanka Navy, attached to the 3rd Fast Gun Boats Squadron. On 19 July 1996, SLNS ''Ranaviru'' under the command of Lieutenant Commander Parakrama Samaraweera, RSP, was dispatch to the seas off the coast of Mullaitivu where the Sri Lanka Army base was under siege during the first battle of Mullaitivu. She led the naval force that included Ranaviru, six Dvora Fast Attack Crafts and the landing ship SLNS ''Shakthi'', tasked with attempting an amphibious landing of a relief force to break the siege. Ranaviru was tasked with providing naval gun fire to cover the landing. Due to stiff resistance by costal and sea units of the LTTE, the landing attempt was abandon and landing ships began to withdraw. Diesel Engine
The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine). Sea Tiger
The Sea Tigers (Tamil: கடற்புலிகள் ''Kaţaṛpulikaḷ'') was the naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It was founded in 1984. The Sea Tigers had a number of small but effective suicide bomber vessels. During its existence it had gained a reputation as a capable adversary for the Sri Lankan Navy. The Battle off the coast of Mullaitivu was a naval battle fought between the Sri Lanka Navy and Sea Tigers on 23 March 1997, off the coast of town of Mullaitivu which has been under control of the LTTE since the Battle of Mullaitivu in 1996. Prelude The LTTE had developed its Sea Tiger arm with suicide units called "Black Sea Tigers" on the lines of their Black Tigers equipped with small high speed crafts packed with explosives that would be rammed into their targets. The USS ''Cole'' bombing was a suicide attack by the terrorist group al-Qaeda against , a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy, on 12 October 2000, while she was being refueled in Yemen's Aden harbor. Seventeen U.S. Navy sailors were killed and thirty-seven injured in the deadliest attack against a United States naval vessel since the USS ''Stark'' incident in 1987. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack against the United States. A U.S. judge has held Sudan liable for the attack, while another has released over $13 million in Sudanese frozen assets to the relatives of those killed.
