SECA Art Award
The SECA Art Award is a contemporary art award program that has been organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) and supported by its auxiliary SECA (Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art) since 1967 to honor San Francisco Bay Area artists. It includes an SFMOMA exhibition, an accompanying catalogue, and a modest cash prize. The SECA Art Award distinguishes “artists working independently at a high level of artistic maturity whose work has not, at the time of recommendation, received substantial recognition." Currently, the SECA Art Award exhibition occurs biennially. Two SFMOMA assistant curators make the selection of finalists and award winners and co-organize the SECA Art Award exhibition. The high-profile, ongoing exhibition series often provides artists with their first major exposure at a large institution. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is a modern and contemporary art museum located in San Francisco, California. Andrea Higgins
Andrea Higgins is an American painter. Early life and education She grew up in Kansas City, received a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College, and received a Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. Career Her paintings include geometric patterns that resemble textiles, based on her experience at Britex Fabrics in San Francisco. The brushstrokes in her oil paintings mimic stitches in fabric. On a visit to Indonesia in 1995 she was inspired by the Hindu women's woven sarongs. She connected these women's fashion to the way that American first ladies dress, inspiring her show "The President's Wives." Her exhibitions have been inspired by characters in literature, including Babbitt and The Picture of Dorian Gray, and American politics, including Nancy Reagan. Colter Jacobsen
Colter Jacobsen (born 1975) is an American artist based in San Francisco. His work includes drawings, paintings and installations. Life Jacobsen was born in Ramona, California and had a Mormon upbringing there. He later moved to San Francisco and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has worked as a care-giver for the blind and disabled. Desiree Holman
Desirée Holman (born 1974) is an American artist. Education and career Holman received her master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts. She was among the 2008 SECA Art Award winners from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as 2007 winner of the Artadia: Fund for Art and Dialogue award. Holman's solo exhibitions include the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Berkeley Art Museum’s MATRIX program. Leslie Shows
Leslie Shows (born 1977) is an American artist, who is recognized for expanding the boundaries of landscape painting. Early life and education Leslie Shows was born in 1977 in Manteca, California. Her childhood in Juneau, Alaska had an intense impact on the work she would create as an adult. She received her B.F.A. degree in 1999 from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), and earned her M.F.A. degree from the California College of the Arts (CCA) in 2006. Mitzi Pederson
Mitzi Pederson (born 1976) is an American artist specializing in abstract sculptural work. Pederson is known for her use of ordinary household, construction, and building materials to explore sculptural concepts of weight, tension, balance, and permanence. She is the recipient of a 2006 SECA Art Award. Pederson splits her time between San Francisco and Berlin. Early life and education Pederson was born in 1976 in Stuart, Florida. Amy Franceschini (born 1970, in Patterson, California) is a contemporary American artist and designer. Her practice spans a broad range of media including drawing, sculpture, design, net art, public art and gardening. She was a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow. Kota Ezawa
Kota Ezawa (born 1969, Cologne, West Germany) is a Japanese-German American artist and arts educator. His artwork usually responds to current events from sources in the news, pop culture, and art history. Ever since his debut 2002 video animation of ''The Simpson Verdict,'' Ezawa has been known for his flattened style in works on paper, light-boxes, and videos. By flattening his pieces into more two-dimensional figures, he creates more focus on the re-contextualized historical events in his pieces. Sarah Cain
Sarah Cain is an American contemporary artist. Life Cain was born in Albany, New York, and grew up in nearby Kinderhook. She moved to California in 1997 to study art at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she received her BFA in 2001. She went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving her MFA in studio art and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2006. Work Cain uses a variety of materials, including traditional canvas, stretcher bars, and paint, as well as less common artifacts, including musical notations, leaves and branches.
