S4 (Berlin)
The S4 line number was used by the Berlin S-Bahn between December 1997 and June 2002. The line acted as a temporary route for the re-opened parts of the Berlin S-Bahn ring (''Ringbahn'' in German) until the complete ring was fully re-opened in June 2002. The ring is now served by lines S41 (clockwise) and S42 (counter-clockwise). Routes Line S4 commenced service between Jungfernheide and Schönhauser Allee in December 1997, servicing the re-opened section of the Berlin ring. In May 1998, line was extended to Bernau. When Berlin ring between Jungfernheide and Westhafen was completed in December 1999, S4 was extended by two more stations. The final alteration to the route was in September 2001 when line was cut back from Bernau to run for the first time to Gesundbrunnen. The Berlin S-Bahn () is a rapid transit railway system in and around Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It has been in operation under this name since December 1930, having been previously called the special tariff area ''Berliner Stadt-, Ring- und Vorortbahnen'' (Berlin city, orbital, and suburban railways). It complements the Berlin U-Bahn and is the link to many outer-Berlin areas, such as Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The S-Bahn Berlin GmbH is the operator of the Berlin S-Bahn. The company was founded on 1 January 1995 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. Background At the turn of the year 1993/1994 the Deutsche Reichsbahn and the Deutsche Bundesbahn merged to form the Deutsche Bahn AG. At the same time, the operation of the S-Bahn in the former West Berlin – until then carried out by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) – was taken over by the ''Reichsbahn'' (which already operated the S-Bahn in the eastern part of the city) and now by Deutsche Bahn. A third rail, also known as a live rail, electric rail or conductor rail, is a method of providing electric power to a railway locomotive or train, through a semi-continuous rigid conductor placed alongside or between the rails of a railway track. Bernau Bei Berlin
Bernau bei Berlin (English ''Bernau by Berlin'', commonly named Bernau) is a German town in the Barnim district. The town is located about northeast of Berlin. History Archaeological excavations of Mesolithic-era sites indicate that this area has been inhabited since about 8800 BC. The city was first mentioned in 1232. The reasons for its founding are not known. According to a legend, Albert I of Brandenburg permitted the founding of the city in 1140 because of the good beer which was offered to him. Beer was brewed with water from the river Panke. Therefore, it was forbidden by law to pollute this river with waste and excrement when brewing took place. Bernau had its boom years before the Thirty Years' War. Large parts of the defensive wall with town gate and wet moats are relics of that time. Wedding (german: der Wedding; ) is a locality in the borough of Mitte, Berlin, Germany and was a separate borough in the north-western inner city until it was fused with Tiergarten and Mitte in Berlin's 2001 administrative reform. At the same time the eastern half of the former borough of Wedding—on the other side of Reinickendorfer Straße—was separated as the new locality of Gesundbrunnen.
