S. Sellamuttu
Sangarapully "Sangare" Sellamuttu, OBE ( ta, சங்கரப்பிள்ளை செல்லமுத்து, 25 February 1916 – 1993) was a Sri Lankan politician and philanthropist. He was a member of the Colombo Municipal Council and was elected Mayor of Colombo in 1951. Educated at the Royal College, Colombo. He became private assistant to Sir Chittampalam Gardiner in 1944 and was appointed to the board of directors of Ceylon Theatres Ltd in 1946. In 1974 he became its chairman. He was one of the founders of the Colombo Hindu College. and played a major role in the reconstruction of the Sri Sarwarjha Sidhi Vinayagar Temple in Modera. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1953 New Year Honours The New Year Honours 1953 for the United Kingdom were announced on 30 December 1952, to celebrate the year passed and mark the beginning of 1953. Colombo Municipal Council
The Colombo Municipal Council is the municipal governing body of Colombo, the largest city and financial centre in Sri Lanka. It consists of a directly elected executive Mayor of Colombo, current elect is Rosy Senanayake, and 119 elected 119 municipal councilors. The council was formed in 1865, it first met in 1866 and derives most of its powers from ''Municipal Council Ordinance No. 29 of 1947''. It is the oldest and the largest local government authority in Sri Lanka which covers a resident population of over 600,000 (as of 2001). The Mayor of Colombo is the Mayor (and head) of the Colombo Municipal Council. The post was created in 1866 when the Colombo Municipal Council was established by the Legislative Council of Ceylon. The Mayor is assisted by the Deputy Mayor and a Municipal Commissioner. Since 1944 the majority of the mayors have been from the United National Party. Royal College, Colombo is a Single-sex education, selective entry boys' school located in Cinnamon Gardens, Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Chittampalam Abraham Gardiner
Sir Chittampalam Abraham Gardiner (6 January 1899 – December 1960) was a Ceylon Tamil businessman and member of the Senate of Ceylon. Early life and family Gardiner was born on 6 January 1899. He was the son of Samuel Vairamuttu Gardiner and Salomapillai Bastiampillai. The Gardiner family were originally from Achchuvely and Manipay in northern Ceylon but later moved to Colombo. Gardiner married Angeline Casie Chetty, daughter of Aloysius Mount Carmel Casie Chetty. They had an adopted son, Cyril Aloysius. Career Gardiner studied law before entering business. He pioneered the cinema business in Ceylon and established The Ceylon Theatres Limited, which is now one of Sri Lanka's largest conglomerates, on 29 September 1928. He controlled several leading businesses in Colombo and had interests in others including Cargills and Millers. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
