''Ruthie on the Telephone'' is an American Comedy television, comedy television series that was broadcast on the CBS Television network at 7:55pm ET from August 7 to November 5, 1949. The show was written by Goodman Ace and sponsored by Phillip Morris USA, Phillip Morris cigarettes. Each episode was only five minutes long. ''Ruthie on the Telephone'' was preceded by ''CBS Evening News, CBS Television News'' at 7:30pm ET, and by ''The Sonny Kendis Show'' at 7:45pm ET. Synopsis The series features a young lady, Ruthie (Ruth Gilbert (actress), Ruth Gilbert), trying to convince a man, Richard (Phillip Reed) to love her via a telephone call. The series used a Split screen (filmmaking), split-screen technique to depict the telephone conversation. Reception Billboard magazine called the show funny, and complimented the split-screen effect. Split Screen (filmmaking)
In film and video production, split screen is the visible division of the screen, traditionally in half, but also in several simultaneous images, rupturing the illusion that the screen's frame is a seamless view of reality, similar to that of the human eye. There may or may not be an explicit borderline. Until the arrival of digital technology, a split screen in films was accomplished by using an optical printer to combine two or more actions filmed separately by copying them onto the same negative, called the composite. In filmmaking split screen is also a technique that allows one actor to appear twice in a scene. The simplest technique is to lock down the camera and shoot the scene twice, with one "version" of the actor appearing on the left side, and the other on the right side. Ruth Gilbert (May 8, 1912 – October 12, 1993) was an American actress, best known for her role as Alice in the first sound version of ''Alice in Wonderland'' in 1931, and as Max in ''The Milton Berle Show''. Career A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Gilbert's role as Alice in the 1931 film ''Alice in Wonderland'' was her first major role. Goodman Ace (January 15, 1899 – March 25, 1982), born Goodman Aiskowitz, was an American humorist, radio writer and comedian, television writer, and magazine columnist. His low-key, literate drollery and softly tart way of tweaking trends and pretenses made him one of the most sought-after writers in radio and television from the 1930s through the 1960s.
