Ruth Gilbert (actress)
Ruth Gilbert (May 8, 1912 – October 12, 1993) was an American actress, best known for her role as Alice in the first sound version of ''Alice in Wonderland'' in 1931, and as Max in ''The Milton Berle Show''. Career A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Gilbert's role as Alice in the 1931 film ''Alice in Wonderland'' was her first major role. The film was made by Metropolitan Studios, an independent film company from Fort Lee, New Jersey. They made it for educational purposes in readiness for the 100th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's birth the following year Gilbert's success in ''Alice in Wonderland'' gained her national recognition and this led to her first Broadway role in '' Girls in Uniform'' in 1932, a play inspired by the German film ''Mädchen in Uniform'', which was in turn based upon the Christa Winsloe novel and play. The Federal Theatre Project (FTP; 1935–1939) was a theatre program established during the Great Depression in the United States, Great Depression as part of the New Deal to fund live artistic performances and entertainment programs in the United States. Phillip Reed (born Milton LeRoy; March 25, 1908 – December 7, 1996) was an American actor. He played Steve Wilson in a series of four films (1947–1948) based on the ''Big Town'' radio series. Early years Reed was a star athlete at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn and attended college for one year before going into acting. His name was changed after he went to Hollywood. The show was written by Goodman Ace and sponsored by Phillip Morris USA, Phillip Morris cigarettes. Each episode was only five minutes long. ''Detective Story'' is a 1949 Play (theatre), play in three acts by United States, American playwright Sidney Kingsley. The play opened on Broadway (theatre), Broadway at the Hudson Theatre on March 23, 1949 where it played until the production moved to the Broadhurst Theatre on July 3, 1950. The production closed on August 12, 1950 after 581 performances. The cast notably included Lydia Clarke who won a Theatre World Award for her performance. Other cast members included Ralph Bellamy as Detective Jim McLeod, Meg Mundy as Mary McLeod, James Westerfield as Detective Lou Brody, Joan Copeland as Susan Carmichael, Harry Worth as Dr. Kurt Schneider, and Maureen Stapleton as Miss Hatch. Lee Grant (born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal; October 31, during the mid-1920s) is an American actress, documentarian, and director. She made her film debut in 1951 as a young shoplifter in William Wyler's ''Detective Story'', co-starring Kirk Douglas and Eleanor Parker. This role earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress as well as winning the Best Actress Award at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival. In 1952, she was blacklisted from most acting jobs for the next 12 years. Grant was able to find only occasional work onstage or as a teacher during this period. It also contributed to her divorce. During this time, Grant appeared in plays on stage. She was removed from the blacklist in 1963 and started to rebuild her on-screen acting career.
