Royal Bank of Canada Building, Havana is a Neoclassical-style bank building located at corner of Calles Aguiar and Obrapia in Habana Vieja. The ground floor was dedicated to the bank, the other floors to offices that were rented; a floor was added (seventh floor) for a semiprivate restaurant and club. Built in 1917, the building was designed by New York-based firm Purdy and Henderson, Engineers, but supervised by Sumner Godfrey Davenport, who would subsequently join the bank in Havana in 1920. In the same year Davenport moved to Canada to become the bank's Chief Architect. Neoclassical Architecture
Neoclassical architecture is an architectural style produced by the Neoclassical movement that began in the mid-18th century in Italy and France. It became one of the most prominent architectural styles in the Western world. The prevailing styles of architecture in most of Europe for the previous two centuries, Renaissance architecture and Baroque architecture, already represented partial revivals of the Classical architecture of ancient Rome and (much less) ancient Greek architecture, but the Neoclassical movement aimed to strip away the excesses of Late Baroque and return to a purer and more authentic classical style, adapted to modern purposes. Sumner Godfrey Davenport
Sumner Godfrey Davenport (November 6, 1877 – March 9, 1956) was an American-born Canadian architect who served as Chief Architect for the Royal Bank of Canada. Life and career Davenport was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, and graduated as an architect from Harvard University in 1901. His first two decades were spent with firms in Boston and New York City. After working with the Royal Bank of Canada in 1917, he was hired by the Canadian bank to work in Cuba in 1920 and shortly after as Chief Architect. Retired from the bank in 1942, he supervised projects with the bank until 1951. Davenport died in Georgeville, Quebec, in 1956. Purdy And Henderson, Engineers
Purdy and Henderson was a New York City-based engineering firm founded by Corydon Tyler Purdy and Lightner Henderson. They were active in the United States and Cuba between 1890 and 1944. Purdy and Henderson was founded in Chicago, and transferred their headquarters to New York City in 1896. They eventually had branch offices in Boston, Seattle, Chicago, and Havana. Purdy and Henderson were a patron of the Seattle Architectural Club in 1910. Lightner Henderson died prematurely in 1916, but the firm continued to operate under the name of Purdy and Henderson well after his death. Purdy and Henderson, Engineers, collaborated with architect H. Craig Severance on 40 Wall Street, which for one month in 1930, was the tallest building in the world. Bank of Nova Scotia Building, Havana is a Neoclassical-style bank building located at the intersection of Calle O´Reilly and Calle Cuba in old Havana. Built in 1906, the building was branch and business offices for Canadian-based Bank of Nova Scotia in the early 20th century. Additional floors were added in 1914 to the original two-floor building. It also served as a Scotiabank's branch in Havana and sold to a local bank Banco Metropolitano S.A. (founded 1996).
