The ''Rosa'' 'George Burns' is a yellow and red striped Floribunda rose cultivar, developed in the United States by Tom Carruth in 1996. The rose was introduced in 1997 by Spring Hill Nurseries. History 'George Burns' was created by American rose breeder, Tom Carruth, in 1996. and introduced into the United States in 1997 by Spring Hill Nurseries. In 2019, the rose was introduced in Australia under the name, 'Glamourpuss', by Swane's Nursery . The stock parents of 'George Burns' are the pink-blend hybrid tea rose cultivar, 'Calico' and the red-blend hybrid tea rose, 'Roller Coaster' (McGredy IV 1987). A Grandiflora rose cultivar, 'Rock & Roll' was developed by Carruth in 2006, by crossing 'George Burns' and ( hybrid tea) 'New Zealand'. Floribunda (rose)
Floribunda (Latin for "many-flowering") is a modern group of garden roses that was developed by crossing hybrid teas with polyantha roses, the latter being derived from crosses between '' Rosa chinensis'' and '' Rosa multiflora'' (sometimes called ''R. polyantha'').Phillips, R. and Rix, M., ''The Ultimate Guide to Roses'', Macmillan, 2004, p226 The idea was to create roses that bloomed with the polyantha profusion, but with hybrid tea floral beauty and colour range. Tom Carruth
Tom Carruth is an American rose hybridizer, who has created more than 100 rose varieties, including eleven All-America Rose Selections (AARS). He is currently the E.L. and Ruth B. Shannon Curator of the Rose Collections at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. Early life and education Carruth's first fifteen years were spent in Pampa, Texas. He knew at an early age that he wanted a career working with flowers. To earn spending money, Carruth sold seeds from the Burpee seed company to local residents. When he was sixteen, Carruth and his family moved to Irving, Texas, where he discovered a passion for plant biology.
