Rod Davis (sailor)
Roderick Hopkins Davis (born August 27, 1955 in the United States) is a former competitive sailor who won Olympic medals for two countries. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, representing the United States, he won the gold medal in the Soling class along with Robert Haines and Edward Trevelyan. After moving to New Zealand he was chosen to represent that country at the next three Olympic Games. Along with Don Cowie he won a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain in the Star class. Davis and Cowie finished fifth at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and were also fifth in the Soling class at Sydney along with 3rd crewman Alan Smith. ''oneAustralia'' was an International America's Cup Class racing yacht owned by a syndicate of the same name and headed by John Bertrand, the former skipper of the America's Cup-winning Australia II. Prior to its entry in the 1995 America's Cup, the yacht attracted controversy due to Bertrand's interpretation of new rules for racing syndicates, and due to attempts by Philip Morris International to advertise on the yacht during the race. The 28th America's Cup was contested between the winner of the 1992 Citizen Cup defender selection series, America³, and the winner of the 1992 Louis Vuitton Cup challenger selection series, Il Moro di Venezia. 1988 America's Cup
The 1988 America's Cup was the 27th America's Cup regatta, and was contested between the defender, San Diego Yacht Club represented by ''Stars & Stripes H3'', and the challenger, the Mercury Bay Boating Club represented by New Zealand Challenge's ''KZ-1''. Run under strict Deed of Gift rules, the regatta was won by the San Diego Yacht club, in a two-race sweep. Challenge and response The 1988 America's Cup was the first hostile Deed of Gift challenge. Dennis Conner had won the America's Cup for the San Diego Yacht Club on 4 February 1987 at the 1987 America's Cup. New Zealand Challenge
New Zealand Challenge was a sailing team funded by Michael Fay that challenged for the America's Cup three times between 1987 and 1992. New Zealand Challenge was the first team from New Zealand to enter the competition. 1987: KZ 7 ''Kiwi Magic'' New Zealand entered the America's Cup competition in 1984, when Marcel Fachler, a Belgian then living in Sydney, entered as a challenger following ''Australia II's'' victory. Later the campaign's director, former government minister Anthony "Aussie" Malcolm, brought in Michael Fay to help organize and finance the challenge. The team made use of former US 12 Meter ''Enterprise'' (now registered as KZ–1). Newport Harbor Yacht Club is a yacht club located on the Balboa Peninsula, Newport Beach, Balboa Peninsula, which is a neighborhood of the city of Newport Beach, Orange County, California. Facilities The Newport Harbor Yacht Club facility has a main dining room and outdoor seating, a private beach, and a pavilion equipped with a barbecue and snack bar. There are mooring cans, plus both wet and dry slips available for members and guests. The wet slips can accommodate boats up to 55 feet in length, and the dry slips are for smaller boats up to 25 feet in length. The club is open 5 days a week, plus a full-time dock staff and shore boat. The club has applied for a building permit to replace their 1919 clubhouse with a larger, modern building. 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup
The 2nd Louis Vuitton Cup was held in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1987. The winner, Stars & Stripes, went on to challenge for and win the 1987 America's Cup. Teams Twelve syndicates from six countries (Canada, France, Italy, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States) competed in 25 boats for the right to challenge. A further two syndicates entered but failed to compete in the Cup itself. The first syndicates arrived in Fremantle in 1984 with most having established a presence by late 1985 for the 1986 12-Metre World Championships. It was estimated that the foreign syndicates spent $200M in the challenge efforts. 1977 America's Cup
The 1977 America's Cup was held in September 1977 at Newport, Rhode Island. The US defender, '' Courageous'', skippered by Ted Turner, defeated the Australian challenger, ''Australia'', skippered by Noel Robins, in a four-race sweep. ''Courageous''' greatest winning margin out of all four races was 2 minutes and 23 seconds. It was the second unsuccessful challenge by Alan Bond. ''Courageous'' had beaten Lowell North's ''Enterprise'' and Ted Hood's ''Independence'' to become the defender. The America's Cup, informally known as the Auld Mug, is a trophy awarded in the sport of sailing. It is the oldest international competition still operating in any sport. America's Cup match races are held between two sailing yachts: one from the yacht club that currently holds the trophy (known as the defender) and the other from the yacht club that is challenging for the cup (the challenger). Matches are held several years apart on dates agreed between the defender and the challenger. There is no fixed schedule, but the races have generally been held every three to four years. The most recent America's Cup match took place in March 2021.
