Roberto Urbay
Roberto Urbay (born August 8, 1953 in Havana) is a Cuban concert pianist and piano professor. Biography Roberto Urbay studied at Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba where he was instructed by Margot Rojas Mendoza and Silvio Rodríguez Cárdenas. He was awarded a scholarship to study at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. There, he studied with Evgeny Mogilevsky and got the diploma of Master of Fine Arts with a specialization as Concert Pianist and Piano Professor in 1983. He was also awarded grants to make postgraduate courses in Hungary on Liszt and Bartók's work in 1986 and 1987 under the guidance of such illustrious pianists as Georges Cziffra and Zoltan Kocsis. Roberto Urbay was awarded the UNEAC Prize - Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba - in 1973, as well as the Special Prize in Chamber Music at the Grandstand for Young Interpreters at the Interpodium Festival in Bratislava (1977). EGREM (Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales, Spanish for ''Enterprise of Recordings and Musical Editions'') is the national record label of Cuba. It is headquartered in Centro Habana, where its main record studios (''Estudios Areito'' 101 & 102) operate. Margot Rojas Mendoza
Margot Rojas Mendoza (24 March 1903 – 1 November 1996) was a Cuban pianist and teacher of Cuban-Mexican origin. She performed as a concert pianist in New York, Mexico and Cuba for several years before turning to teaching. Several of her pupils became distinguished musicians. Early years Margot Rojas was born in Veracruz, Mexico on 24 March 1903. Her mother was Cuban and her father Mexican. She started her musical studies at the age of five under her aunt, Consuelo Mendoza. In 1912 she moved with her family to Havana, where she continued her studies at the Hubert de Blanck Conservatory. She was taught theory by José Molina Torres and Rafaela Serrano, and was taught piano by Consuelo Quesada and Hubert de Blanck. In Cuba in 1913 the public performances of Ernesto Lecuona and Dulce María Serret made a great impression on her. She graduated from Hubert de Blanck's piano classes in 1916. Evgeny Mogilevsky
Evgeny Gedeonovich Mogilevsky (russian: Евгений Гедеонович Могилевский; 16 September 1945 – 28 January 2023) was a pianist. Son and pupil of Seraphima Mogilevsky at the Stolyarsky Music school in his hometown Odesa, Ukraine. Later studied with Heinrich Neuhaus and Yakov Zak at the Moscow Conservatory. He was the father of pianists Maxim and Alexander Mogilevsky. In 1964 at the age of 18, he became the third Soviet pianist to win the Queen Elisabeth Competition, after Emil Gilels and Vladimir Ashkenazy. He has had a significant career, including internationally (in the USA as a Sol Hurok artist). Heitor Villa-Lobos
Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5, 1887November 17, 1959) was a Brazilian composer, conductor, cellist, and classical guitarist described as "the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music". Villa-Lobos has become the best-known South American composer of all time. A prolific composer, he wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works, totaling over 2000 works by his death in 1959. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his ''Bachianas Brasileiras'' (Brazilian Bachian-pieces) and his Chôros.
