Robert Xalino
Roberto Xalino (born March 21, 1987) is a Cape Verdean singer, rapper and producer who currently resides in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is the son of the Capeverdean singer and producer Val Xalino. Biography Roberto Xalino was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. Together with his brother Val, he later immigrated to Sweden and lived in the city of Gothenburg in the western part. He is best known as the son of Val Xalino who came from a Cape Verdean family of musicians named Xalino, singers of traditional music. His family once lived at 35 Rua de Moeda where famous singers in the 1950s and the 1960s visited including Eddy Moreno, Djuta Silva, Armando de Jon Xalino, Eduardo de Jon Xalino and his uncles Xante and Zuca Xalino. Festival De Baía Das Gatas
The Festival de Baía das Gatas or the Baía das Gatas Festival and the Baía das Gatas Music Festival takes place on a full moon weekend in August in Baía das Gatas, a village and a bay in the northeastern part of the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. It is the most popular music festival in Cape Verde and are likely being the first, in its early years, it was the only music festival in the country until the Festival de Gamboa which was established in 1992 in Praia in the island of Santiago. It is nicknamed the Woodstock of Africa. Manuel De Novas
Manuel d' Novas (February 24, 1938 — September 28, 2009) was a Cape Verdean poet and composer. Biography Manuel Jesus Lopes was born in Penha da França, one of the neighbourhoods of Ribeira Grande on the island of Santo Antão, he became one of the most important poets and composers of Cape Verde. His music is known all over the world, through performers like Cesária Évora, Bana and others. He lived in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. He visited 35 Rua de Moeda where other Cape Verdean musicians visited including Bana. He took part in the 2003 Baía das Gatas Music Festival. Manuel died on September 27, 2009, from a stroke he suffered for three years that started in Portugal, after staying at the hospital named Baptista de Sousa for about a week. Adriano Gonçalves (5 March 1932 – 13 July 2013), known by his stage name Bana and called the " King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country. Biography He was born in Mindelo on 5 March 1932, some sources said he was born on 11 March. In his childhood years, he was surrounded by music with local singers. At age four, he appeared with local singers. Bana, who was over seven feet tall, began his musical career during Portuguese colonial rule, when he worked as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B. Leza. In the 1950s, the singer, uncle of Cesária Évora taught Bana and many other artists the art of morna songs. In 1958, BeLeza was presented at a round with the Tuna Académica da Coimbra which took place in São Vicente Island.
