Risto Orko
Risto Orko (born Risto Eliel William Nylund; 15 September 1899 – 29 September 2001) was a Finnish film producer and director. Orko was born in Rauma. With a career of over 60 years at the film studio Suomi-Filmi, he rose to be head of production and chief director in the 1930s. He became its CEO in 1945. In the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, Suomi-Filmi produced hundreds of films and numerous shorts. In the years 1933–43, Orko directed many films, including two (''Aktivistit'' and ''Jääkärin morsian''), which were banned for being "overly patriotic". He had a joint cooperation with the German film industry during World War II. Orko also directed a Finnish-Soviet co-production, released into the American market with subtitles, entitled ''The Day the Earth Froze'' in 1959. Death His death in Helsinki, aged 102, was received with great sadness in his native Finland; thereafter he became known as the "last Finnish Film Tycoon". Rauma, Finland
Rauma (; sv, Raumo) is a town and municipality of around () inhabitants on the west coast of Finland, north of Turku, and south of Pori. Its neighbouring municipalities are Eura, Eurajoki, Laitila and Pyhäranta. Granted town privileges on 17 April 1442 (then under the rule of Sweden), Rauma is known for its paper and maritime industry, high quality lace (since the 18th century) and the old wooden architecture of the city centre (Old Rauma, Vanha Rauma), which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. History In the 14th century, before it was declared a town, Rauma had a Franciscan monastery and a Catholic church. ''Borrowing Matchsticks'' (russian: За спичками, Za spichkami, fi, Tulitikkuja lainaamassa) is a Soviet–Finnish comedy film produced by Mosfilm and Suomifilm in 1980. Film based on the novel by Algot Untola. Plot Antti Ihalainen (Yevgeny Leonov) lives happily on the farm with his wife Anna-Lisa (Rita Polster). Once, when the house ran out of matches and the Ihalainens had nothing to make a fire for cooking coffee so loved by the Finns, Anna-Lisa sent her husband to a neighbor Hyvärinen (Sergei Filippov) for matches. On the way Ihalainen meets an old friend Jussi Vatanen (Vyacheslav Nevinny). Widower Jussi asks Ihalainen woo him Hyvärinen's daughter Anna-Kaisa (Vera Ivleva). ''Sampo'' (russian: Сампо) is a 1959 Soviet–Finnish fantasy film based loosely on the events depicted in the Finnish national epic ''Kalevala''. In the United States, it was released in an edited version, ''The Day the Earth Froze'', by American International Pictures as a double feature with ''Conquered City''. This version was later featured in a 1993 episode of '' Mystery Science Theater 3000''.
