Riksserien
The Swedish Women's Hockey League ( sv, Svenska damhockeyligan), abbreviated SDHL, is the elite league for women's ice hockey in Sweden. It was established in 2007 as the by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and was renamed prior to the 2016–17 season. The league has ten teams and employs a system of promotion and relegation with the Damettan. The unexpected withdrawal of Göteborg HC after playing only thirteen games of the 2022–23 season caused the number of teams to decrease to nine for the remainder of that season. Bodychecking was allowed for the 2022–23 season. Format When a game is tied after regulation, a sudden death overtime is played with only four skaters per team for maximum 10 minutes (or 20 minutes in the playoffs). If the game is still tied after overtime, the winner is decided by game winning shots. Djurgårdens IF Hockey (women)
Djurgården IF Hockey Dam are a professional ice hockey club in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). They play in Stockholm at Hovet. The team is a section within the Djurgårdens IF multi-sport organization and are affiliated with its many other teams. History In March 2014, the Djurgårdens IF organisation announced its intention to form a women's ice hockey section, with Danijela Rundqvist in charge of recruitment and Jared Cipparone serving as head coach. The following year, the organisation took over the Segeltorps IF women's ice hockey club following its financial difficulties and relegation from Riksserien. After just one year under the Djurgården name in Damettan, during which the club made several big signings, including Valentina Lizana Wallner and Tina Enström, the club won promotion back to the top flight, defeating Södertälje 6-1 in the qualification playoffs. Ice hockey is one of Sweden's most popular sports and participation in women's ice hockey is increasing; the number of registered women's ice hockey players in Sweden increased from 3,425 in 2011 to 5,973 in 2020. History The first organized women's ice hockey game in Sweden was played in 1969 between Modo AIK and Timrå IK. The Swedish women's national team played its first games in April 1987, during the 1987 Women's World Tournament in Ontario, Canada. The first, unofficial National Championship was played in 1985. Brynäs IF Dam
Brynäs IF Dam are an ice hockey team in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). They play in Gävle, on the eastern-central coast of Sweden, at the Monitor ERP Arena. A constituent part of the Swedish sports club Brynäs IF, they are the sister team of Brynäs IF of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). History Between 2010 and 2013, the club advanced to the Riksserien playoff finals four seasons in a row, finishing in second place each time. In 2014, the club unveiled new jerseys, the only ones in Europe to be completely ad-free. Modo Hockey Dam
MoDo Hockey Dam are an ice hockey team in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL), the top flight of women's hockey in Sweden. They play in Örnsköldsvik, in the historical province of Ångermanland on the east coast of Sweden, at the Hägglunds Arena. The club's junior side, Modo Hockey 2, plays in the North division of the Damettan. History The women's section of Modo Hockey was formed in 1968 under the name of Modo AIK, playing the first ever organised women's hockey match in Sweden against Timrå IK in 1969. 2016–17 SDHL Season
The 2016–17 SDHL season was the tenth season of the Swedish Women's Hockey League. The season began in September 2016 and ended in March 2017. It was the first season the league was known under the SDHL name, having changed from Riksserien the previous year. AIK Hockey Dam
AIK Hockey Dam is a professional ice hockey team in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (, SDHL), the top flight of Swedish's women's ice hockey. They play in Solna Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden at the Ritorps Ishall. History AIK were promoted to Riksserien, the predecessor of the SDHL, in 2008. They won the Swedish Championship twice in their first five top-flight seasons, in 2009 and 2013. Damettan
DamEttan (called Division 1, 2007–2015) is the second-highest women's ice hockey league in Sweden, below the SDHL and above Damtvåan. Beginning with the first official women's ice hockey Swedish Championship in 1988, the league served as the highest division for women's ice hockey and the winner of its playoffs was named Swedish Champion. During the 2007–08 season, the best Division 1 teams qualified for a newly created premier league, the Riksserien (renamed SDHL in 2016), which made Division 1 the second-tier league.
