Richard Phillips (born May 16, 1955) is an American United States Merchant Marine, merchant mariner and author who served as Captain (nautical), captain of the Maersk Alabama hijacking, MV ''Maersk Alabama'' during its hijacking by Somali pirates in April 2009. Early life and education Of Irish descent, Phillips was born in Massachusetts, and graduated from Winchester High School (Massachusetts), Winchester High School in 1973. Phillips enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and planned to study international law but transferred to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, from which he graduated in 1979. MV ''Tygra'' (formerly MV ''Maersk Alabama'') is a container ship currently operated by the Waterman Steamship Corporation and owned by Element Shipmanagement SA of Piraeus, Greece. She was previously owned by the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group and operated by Maersk Line and Maersk Line Limited.
