Rhems, South Carolina
Rhems is an unincorporated community located on the boundary between Williamsburg County and Georgetown County, South Carolina, United States. It is centered around the intersection of County Line Road (SC 51), Rhems Road, and Browns Ferry Road (SC 41), not far from Black Mingo Creek, and just south of the historic Willtown site.J. W. South Carolina Highway 41 (SC 41) is a state highway, connecting the Charleston region with eastern portions of the Pee Dee region in South Carolina. Charles Flint Rhem (January 24, 1901 – July 30, 1969), born in Rhems, South Carolina, was a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals (1924–28, 1930–32, 1934 and 1936), Philadelphia Phillies (1932–33) and Boston Braves (1934–35). Before his professional career, Rhem played for the Clemson Tigers baseball team (1922–24). Rhems Formation
The Rhems Formation, also called the Rhems Shale, is a geologic formation in South Carolina. The Rhems Formation is considered part of the Black Mingo Group. It was named after Rhems, SC which is located five miles from the type locality at Perkins Bluff. The unit is a light gray to black shale interlaminated with thin seams of fine-grained sand and mica with some layers partially silicified. Black Mingo Creek
Black Mingo Creek is a tributary to the Black River in coastal South Carolina. The creek derives its name from the Mingo, a tribe that once inhabited the fork made by the junction of Indiantown Swamp and Black Mingo Creek. It is a blackwater river: the presence of tannin gives it the color of tea. The river is relatively untouched by modern development, and is mostly surrounded by wetlands of cypress and tupelo with the adjacent higher lands mostly used for conventional agriculture or tree farming. The waters are a favorite fishing site for largemouth bass and panfish. Beavers are abundant, as well as great blue herons, songbirds and crows. Occasionally a bald eagle can be sighted. South Carolina Highway 51
South Carolina Highway 51 (SC 51) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It is unique for having two segments, which are separated by over from each other. The first segment, traveling north–south, connects the cities of Georgetown and Florence, via the towns of Hemingway, Johnsonville, and Pamplico. The second segment, near Fort Mill, is a reciprocated continuation of North Carolina Highway 51 (NC 51) from the North Carolina state line to U.S. Route 21 (US 21).
