Aix-en-Provence (, , ; oc, label= Provençal, Ais de Provença in classical norm, or in Mistralian norm, ; la, Aquae Sextiae), or simply Aix ( medieval Occitan: ''Aics''), is a city and commune in southern France, about north of Marseille. The film is based on a 1944 novel ''Un recteur de l'Île de Sein'' by Henri Queffelec. It was shot at the Billancourt Studios in Paris. Location shooting took place on the Île de Sein off Finistère in Brittany. The film's sets were designed by the art director René Renoux. It was originally due to be the French entry at the 1950 Venice Film Festival but it was withdrawn due to fears that its subject might offend the Catholic Church. Plot Pilou and Augusta are in love, but Augusta's father, the conservative mayor of the city, does not look upon their relationship kindly. His reprobation is directed less at the boy himself than at his parents, Maryse and Alcide Garonne, who are living together unmarried.
