Renato Canini
Renato Vinícius Canini (February 22, 1936 — October 30, 2013) was a Brazilian illustrator, known for his work in publications like ''O Pasquim'' and ''Pancada'', and for Editora Abril, where he drew Disney comics, chiefly José Carioca. He gave the character a more authorial style, and a more Brazilian identity. Career Canini' first job was at age 21, for Rio Grande do Sul state's Secretary of Education and Culture, doing illustrations for the children's magazine ''Cacique''. When the publication ceased, Canini kept doing engineering technical drawings until he completed ten years as a civil servant, a thing he despised. He also collaborated for the newspaper ''Correio do Povo'', TV Piratini and alternative publications. In 1967 Canini was invited by a Methodist pastor (Rev. Willian Schisler Filho - Dico), to be an illustrator for the children's magazine ''Bem-Te-Vi'', and moved to São Paulo. O Pasquim
''O Pasquim'' was a Brazilian weekly newspaper published in Rio de Janeiro from 1969 to the mid 1970s. It was critical of the military dictatorship and it is considered the founding periodical of Brazil's alternative press. The idea for the periodical began in 1968 after a meeting of cartoonist Jaguar with journalists Tarso de Castro and Sérgio Cabral. They were looking for an alternative to substitute Sergio Porto's tabloid ''A carapuça''. The name was Jaguar's idea, inspired in the Italian folk-tale character ''Pasquino'', who, according to the legend, used to write and tell stories in a major public square. As the time went by, prominent figures such as Walter Campos de Carvalho, Ziraldo, Millôr Fernandes, Prósperi and Fortuna joined the team. History ''O Pasquim'' was established in 1969. Lambiek
Galerie Lambiek is a Dutch comic book store and art gallery in Amsterdam, founded on November 8, 1968 by Kees Kousemaker (, – Bussum, ), though since 2007, his son Boris Kousemaker is the current owner. From 1968 to 2015, it was located in the Kerkstraat, but in November 2015, the store moved to the Koningsstraat 27. As of 2018, Lambiek is the oldest comics store in Europe, and the oldest worldwide still in existence. The name "Lambiek" originated as a misspelling of the name of the comics character Lambik, from the popular Suske & Wiske comic book series created by Belgian artist Willy Vandersteen. Ivan Saidenberg
Ivan Saidenberg (November 12, 1940 – September 30, 2009) was a Brazilian comics artist, writer and cartoonist. Career Saidenberg began his career in 1960 at the Outubro publishing house, where he worked until 1963 creating horror comics. Later he also worked at Taika and Royal publishing houses with comics and westerns, war and espionage. In 1971, he started working at editora Abril with Disney comics, being one of the most prolific Brazilian authors of Disney stories. In 1973 he created the character The Red Bat ( pt, Morcego Vermelho), Fethry Duck's superhero alter ego. The character was quite successful in Brazil, but had few stories published abroad (mostly in Italy, where he was named Paper Bat, and in Portugal). Editora Abril is a major Brazilian publisher and printing company and one of the biggest media holdings in Latin America. The company was founded in 1950 by Victor Civita in São Paulo and is now part of Grupo Abril. Civita had initially founded his publisher as Editora Primavera, publishing an unsuccessful comic magazine named in Brazil ''Raio Vermelho''. The following year, Civita changed its name to Abril - referencing the month in which spring begins on the northern hemisphere - - and published its first title, ''Donald Duck'', in Brazil called ''Pato Donald'', which continues to run to this date. Donald Duck, a cartoon character created by the Walt Disney Company, is today the star of dozens of comic-book and comic-strip stories published each month (in certain parts of the world, each week) around the world.
