The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. 1964 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1964 Saskatchewan general election was held on April 22, 1964, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) government of Premier Woodrow Lloyd was defeated by the Liberal Party, led by Ross Thatcher. The CCF had governed Saskatchewan since the 1944 election under the leadership (until December 1961) of Tommy Douglas. By 1964 the provincial Social Credit Party had collapsed, nominating only two candidates. In another morale hit, the federal Social Credit Party endorsed the Liberals during the election. While the CCF held on to nearly all of their vote from the previous election and only trailed the Liberals by 0.1%, most of the shift in Social Credit support went to the Liberals and proved decisive in helping to push Thatcher to a majority government. Regina City is a former provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Regina City elected a single MLA 1905 to 1917. It elected two members 1921 to 1948, three members in 1952 and 1956, and four members in 1960. Regina North East
Regina Northeast is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. This district includes the neighbourhoods of Parkridge, Uplands, Glencairn and Glencairn Village. The district was created in 1967 out of parts of Regina North and Regina East. Between 1991 and 1995, this riding was called "Regina Churchill Downs". Kevin Doherty of the Saskatchewan Party won the riding in the general elections of 2011 and 2016, but announced his retirement from politics in the spring of 2018 and resigned the seat. Edward Charles Whelan
Edward Charles Whelan (August 6, 1919 – December 11, 2007) was a political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Regina City from 1960 to 1964, Regina North from 1964 to 1967 and Regina North West from 1967 to 1979 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as firstly a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation party member and then as a New Democratic Party member. He was born in Amherstburg, Ontario, the son of Charles Bernard Whelan and Frances Kelly, and was educated in local schools and at the Toronto Technical School. Whelan took over the operation of the family farm following the death of his father. Later, he worked as a machinist in automobile plants in Windsor. Whelan moved to Saskatchewan in 1943 and took up farming there. In 1948, he married Pemrose Henry. Whelan served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Mineral Resources and as Minister of Consumer Affairs. With his wife, he published a book on the life of Tommy Douglas, ''Touched by Tommy''. Ron Atchison
Ronald William Atchison (April 21, 1930 – June 23, 2010) was a Canadian football defensive lineman who played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1952 through 1968. He was part of the Grey Cup championship-winning Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1966. Atchison was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. Born in Central Butte and raised in Saskatoon, Atchison played for the Saskatoon Hilltops from 1947 to 1949. In 1976, in recognition, the Hilltops named their practice field and permanent quarters after him. During Atchison's time as a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, he was named to the CFL's Western All-Star team 6 times as a defensive tackle.
