Regina North West
Regina North West was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. It was located in Regina. The riding was created prior to the 1967 election out of parts of Regina North and Regina West. It was abolished prior to the 1995 election into Regina Qu'Appelle Valley and Regina Sherwood. 1982 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1982 Saskatchewan general election was held on April 26, 1982, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Progressive Conservative Party, led by Grant Devine, defeated the New Democratic Party government of Premier Allan Blakeney, which had governed the province since the 1971 election. The Tories won over half the popular vote, and a large majority in the legislature – the first time that the party had won an outright majority, and making Devine only the second Tory premier in the province's history. The only other time that the Tories had ever led a government was after the 1929 election, when James Anderson led a coalition government of Conservatives, Progressives and independents. The NDP vote fell to its lowest level since 1938, and the party lost 35 of its 44 seats in the legislature – the second-worst defeat of a sitting government in the province's history, behind only the Saskatchewan Liberal Party's 38-seat loss in 1944. Edward Cyril Malone
Edward Cyril "Ted" Malone (born July 17, 1937) is a retired Saskatchewan lawyer, politician and judge. He represented Regina Lakeview in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1973 to 1978 and was leader of the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan from 1976 to 1981. He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1937, the son of Justin Cyril Malone and Marion Grassick who was the daughter of James Grassick, a Regina MLA and mayor. Malone studied law at the University of Saskatchewan and went on to work for the federal and provincial Liberal parties. 1991 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1991 Saskatchewan general election was held on October 21, 1991, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Progressive Conservative government of Premier Grant Devine was defeated by the New Democratic Party, led by former provincial Attorney General Roy Romanow. A major source of dissatisfaction with the Grant Devine government was the "Fair Share Saskatchewan" program, a scheme to distribute public service jobs more evenly across the province; a plan especially unpopular with workers scheduled to be relocated from Regina to rural districts. The Devine government was also notorious for a home construction and renovation relief program which reimbursed homeowners who did their own renovations. Another factor was the unpopularity of the federal Progressive Conservatives under then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan is a conservative political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Prior to 1942, it was known as the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan. Members are commonly known as Tories. History Early years, 1905–1934 It was the Saskatchewan successor to the eastern half of the North-West Territories Conservatives. The Conservative Party of Saskatchewan's first leader, Frederick W. A. G. Haultain, was so upset at sections of the federal legislation that created the province relating to immigration, education, and natural resources that he renamed the party the Provincial Rights Party for the 1905 and 1908 general elections. The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. The 22nd Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was elected in the 1991 Saskatchewan election. It was controlled by the New Democratic Party under Premier Roy Romanow. With 66 representatives elected, the 22nd Assembly had the largest number of MLAs in Saskatchewan history. In the fall of 1992 former premier Grant Devine resigned as leader of the opposition Progressive Conservative party. 1986 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1986 Saskatchewan general election was held on October 20, 1986, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Progressive Conservative government of Premier Grant Devine was returned for a second term with a reduced majority in the legislature. While the New Democratic Party managed to increase its share of the popular vote and significantly increase its presence in the legislature, former Premier Allan Blakeney's attempt to return to power was unsuccessful. Despite winning slightly more votes than the Tories, most of the NDP margin was wasted on landslide margins in Regina and Saskatoon. While the NDP won eight seats in Regina and eight seats in Saskatoon, they only won nine seats in the rest of the province. As a result, they were consigned to Official Opposition status for another term. The Western Canada Concept Party of Saskatchewan was a provincial political party that was the Saskatchewan, Canada branch of the Western Canada Concept, a federal political party that advocated the separation of the four western provinces of Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) to form a new country. The party reached its peak during the 1982 provincial election, where the WCC won more votes than the Saskatchewan Liberal Party candidate in 23 of the province's 64 constituencies. In three ridings the WCC candidate captured more than 1,000 votes – in Moosomin, Souris-Cannington, and Shaunavon. Two disgruntled PC MLA's, Lloyd Hampton and Bill Sveinson, later attempted to join the WCC, thus giving the party a presence in the Legislature.
