Reformist Democratic Party
Reformist Democratic Party (in Spanish: ''Partido Democrático Reformista'') was a political party in Peru. It was founded in 1920 by Augusto Bernardino Leguía y Salcedo, whose regime, which began the previous year, had led to a dictatorial government. It was a party with a strong personal character, whose members included the friends and relatives of President Leguía, as well as many public employees. It lacked an ideology and an authentic program and was only organized to support Leguía in the perpetuation of him in power. After the fall of Leguía in 1930, it did not again have a leading role in Peruvian politics and ended up dissolving. Context At the end of the second government of President José Pardo y Barreda (of the Civilista Party), elections were called in 1919. The former president Augusto B. Roberto Leguía
Roberto Leguía (1866-1930) was the first Vice President of Peru from 1912 to 1914. Early life Leguía was born in 1866 in Lambayeque, Peru. His father was Nicanor Leguía y Duarte and mother was María del Carmendo Salcedo. He is a descendant of a Basque immigrant named Estaquio Leguía, who was a tobacco farmer. Leguía also engaged in agriculture in early life. Political career Roberto Leguía was the brother of dictator Augusto Leguía. Leguía served as President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1911 to 1912. Then he served as first Vice President of Peru from 1912 to 1914. But the swearing-in ceremony for the vice president never took place. Leguía travelled to Argentina and remained there for 15 years.
