''For other Amoraic sages of Babylonia with the name "Rav Kahana", see Rav Kahana.'' Rav Kahana IV (Hebrew: רב כהנא (הרביעי)) was a Babylonian rabbi, of the fifth and sixth generation of amoraim. Biography He was the cousin of Rav Ashi and served as the Dean of the Pumbedita Academy from 395 (ד'קנ"ו, Hebrew calendar) until 412 (ד'קע"ג, Hebrew calendar). He lived in Pum Nahara, and was head of the court there. One of his children died shortly after birth. His sons seem to have been wealthy. Despite being of the same generation as Rav Papa and Huna b. Joshua, he did not study with them, though he did value their teachings. He debated Rav Ashi on issues of the Halakha, and called Ashi by the honorific title "Mar". Amoraim
''Amoraim'' (Aramaic language, Aramaic: plural or , singular ''Amora'' or ''Amoray''; "those who say" or "those who speak over the people", or "spokesmen") refers to Jewish scholars of the period from about 200 to 500 Common Era, CE, who "said" or "told over" the teachings of the Oral Torah. They were primarily located in Babylonia and the Land of Israel. Their legal discussions and debates were eventually Codification (law), codified in the Gemara. The ''Amoraim'' followed the ''Tannaim'' in the sequence of ancient Jewish scholars. The ''Tannaim'' were direct transmitters of uncodified oral tradition; the ''Amoraim'' expounded upon and clarified the oral law after its initial codification. Rav Zevid
Rav Zevid (or Rav Zebid; he, רב זביד (השני) (died 385 CE), read as ''Rav Zevid Ha-Sheni'', lit. "Rav Zevid II") was an '' Amora'' of Babylon of the fourth and fifth generation of the Amora era. Biography He was a disciple of Rava and a scholarly opponent of Rav Papa. According to the ''Iggeret Rav Sherira Gaon'', he served as head of the academy of Pumbedita. He was a contemporary of Abaye, whose halakhot he transmitted, and of whom he was perhaps a pupil. He also transmitted the halakhot of Rava and Rav Nachman. but he particularly preferred the decisions of Abaye, and it is narrated that his adherence to Abaye caused his death. When the people of the exilarch once questioned R. Berakhot (Talmud)
Berakhot ( he, בְּרָכוֹת, Brakhot, lit. "Blessings") is the first tractate of ''Seder Zeraim'' ("Order of Seeds") of the Mishnah and of the Talmud. The tractate discusses the rules of prayers, particularly the Shema and the Amidah, and blessings for various circumstances. Since a large part of the tractate is concerned with the many ''berakhot'' ( en, blessings), all comprising the formal liturgical element beginning with words "Blessed are you, Lord our God….", it is named for the initial word of these special form of prayer. Halakha
''Halakha'' (; he, הֲלָכָה, ), also transliterated as ''halacha'', ''halakhah'', and ''halocho'' ( ), is the collective body of Jewish religious laws which is derived from the written and Oral Torah. Rav Papa
Rav Pappa ( he, רַב פַּפָּא) (c. 300 – died 375) was a Babylonian rabbi, of the fifth generation of amoraim. Biography He was a student of Rava and Abaye. After the death of his teachers he founded a school at Naresh, a city near Sura, in which he officiated as "resh metivta," his friend and associate, Rav Huna ben Joshua, acting as "resh kallah" (356-375). Papa's father seems to have been wealthy and to have enabled his son to devote himself to study. Papa inherited some property from his father; and he also amassed great wealth by brewing beer, an occupation in which he was an expert. He likewise engaged in extensive and successful business undertakings, and his teacher Rava once said of him: "Happy is the righteous man who is as prosperous on earth as only the wicked usually are!". Pumbedita Academy
Pumbedita Academy or Pumbedita Yeshiva ( he, ישיבת פומבדיתא; sometimes ''Pumbeditha'', ''Pumpedita'', ''Pumbedisa'') was a yeshiva in Babylon during the era of the Amoraim and Geonim sages.
