Railway Safety Regulator
The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) is an agency of the government of South Africa, headquartered in Midrand, Johannesburg that regulates railway safety. The agency oversees railway safety, conducts audits and inspections and investigates accidents and incidents related to railways. The National Railway Safety Regulator Act No. 16 of 2002 established the RSR. The RSR’s oversight role begins before the first train leaves the station. To operate on the South African rail network, train operators must apply to the RSR for a safety permit, demonstrating that they meet prescribed operational requirements. Affairs The RSR's Head Office is situated at Building 4, Waterfall Point Office Park in Midrand, Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Hennenman–Kroonstad Train Crash
On 4 January 2018, a passenger train operated by Shosholoza Meyl collided with a truck at a level crossing at Geneva Station between Hennenman and Kroonstad, in the Free State, South Africa. The train derailed, and seven of the twelve carriages caught fire. Twenty-one people were killed and 254 others were injured. Accident At about 09:15 local time (07:15 UTC) on 4 January 2018, a passenger train, operated by Shosholoza Meyl, carrying 429 passengers, was travelling from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg when it collided with a truck on the Geneva Station level crossing, around south-west of Johannesburg. Pretoria Train Accident
The Pretoria train accident occurred on 21 April 2010 when a train of carriages ran away for from Centurion Station and derailed at Pretoria. Three people were killed and seven were seriously injured. Blackheath Train Accident
The Blackheath train accident occurred at 7:03 a.m. on 25 August 2010 when a Metrorail commuter train crashed into a minibus taxi on the Buttskop Road level crossing in Blackheath, a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. The minibus was carrying fourteen children to school; nine died on the scene and five were hospitalised. One of the injured children died two days later in the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital. The minibus driver was also hospitalised; there were no injuries aboard the train. An initial investigation by the Railway Safety Regulator determined that the lights and booms at the crossing were in full working order. Bruma is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa.
