Ragtime (TV Series)
''Ragtime'' is a children's television series created by Michael Cole and presented by Maggie Henderson and Fred Harris. The programme features play with words, songs, stories and puppets. Puppets made by Joanne Cole emerge from the green Ragtime Bag, including wooden spoons with faces drawn on them. These are named Mr Porridge, Mr Curry, Mr Jelly, Miss Sponge, Mrs Custard, Uncle Casserole and Mrs Ragamuffin. Other puppet regulars include Dax and Sniff (both dogs), Humbug the tiger and Bubble, a cushion-shaped toy. The music was provided by Peter Gosling and Dave Moses. In 1973 the series won a Society of Film and Television Award (later known as a BAFTA) for Best Children's Programme. Children's Television Series
Children's television series (or children's television shows) are television programs designed for children, normally scheduled for broadcast during the morning and afternoon when children are awake. They can sometimes run during the early evening, allowing younger children to watch them after school. The purpose of these shows is mainly to entertain or educate. Michael Cole (writer)
Michael Cole (17 March 1933 – 4 August 2001) was a British writer. He created a number of children's programmes from the 1970s to the 1990s, including ''Alphabet Castle'', ''Heads and Tails (TV series), Heads and Tails'' and ''Ragtime (TV series), Ragtime'', for which he won a Society of Film and Television Award (later known as a British Academy of Film and Television Arts, BAFTA) for Best Children's Programme. Together with his wife Joanne Cole, he created ''Bod (TV series), Bod'', originally published as four books in 1965 and made into a TV show in the 1970s, as well as ''Fingerbobs'' and ''Gran (TV series), Gran''. Life and work Michael Cole was born in Willesden, London on 17 March 1933. During the war he and his family were evacuated to Cheltenham where after junior school he went to Cheltenham College. Fred Harris (presenter)
Fred Harris is a British comedian and children's television presenter. Formerly a schoolteacher, he began his television career as a presenter of the BBC children's programme '' Play School'', on which he appeared regularly between 1973 and 1988. During this time he was also a presenter on ''Ragtime'' and '' Chock-A-Block''. During the rise of the microcomputer in the early 1980s he fronted several home computing BBC programmes, including '' Micro Live'' (which formed part of BBC's ongoing Computer Literacy Project). He also presented a number of educational and schools programmes on the subject of maths, including ATV's ''Figure it Out'' (memorable for having a set which included a giant pocket calculator), Central Television's ''Basic Maths'' and Channel 4's ''Make It Count''. Cynthia Felgate (8 October 1935, Birmingham – 2 November 1991, Weedon Lois, Northamptonshire) was a British television producer, later executive producer, known for working on children's television programmes such as '' Play School'' and for creating ''Playbus'' (later ''Playdays'') for the BBC with her own production company, Felgate Productions. Puppet
A puppet is an object, often resembling a human, animal or Legendary creature, mythical figure, that is animated or manipulated by a person called a puppeteer. The puppeteer uses movements of their hands, arms, or control devices such as rods or strings to move the body, head, limbs, and in some cases the mouth and eyes of the puppet. Joanne Cole
Joanne Cole (6 June 1934 – 7 August 1985) was a British artist and illustrator. She most notably produced numerous children's books in the 1960s through to the 1980s. She also created artwork and puppets for British TV children's programmes. Together with husband Michael Cole they created '' Bod''. Bod originally appeared as four books, published in the UK by Methuen in 1965 and later released in France and the United States. The Coles collaborated on other children books including ''Wet Albert'' (1967) about a boy followed around by a rain cloud with crayon drawings by Cole and a series of four ''Kate and Sam'' books (1971) about the over-imaginative ideas of a young brother and sister. She also illustrated seven Jill Tomlinson books, including ''The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark'' (1973).
