Raft River Valley
The Raft River Valley is a valley in Cassia County, Idaho, Cassia County, Idaho and Box Elder County, Utah, Box Elder County, Utah in the United States. Description The valley is bounded by the Sublett Range on the northern east, the Black Pine Mountains on the southern east, the Raft River Mountains on the south, the Upper Raft River Valley on the very southern west, the Jim Sage Mountains on the southern west, the Cotterel Mountains on the northern west, and the Snake River on the north. The Raft River flows north through most of the valley. The valley is traversed northwest–southeast by Interstate 84 in Idaho, Interstate 84 and northwest–northeast by Interstate 86 (Idaho), Interstate 86. Portions of Idaho State Highway 77 and Idaho State Highway 81 also located in the valley. Cassia County, Idaho
Cassia County is a county in the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 Census the county had a population of 24,655. The county seat and largest city is Burley. Cassia County is included in the Burley, ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The first Europeans explored the Milner area in Cassia County in 1811. It was trappers who initially developed the Oregon Trail, which ran on the county's northern border. The Raft River's junction with the Oregon Trail marked the split for the California Trail. While the Oregon and California trails brought hundreds of thousands of emigrants through Cassia County, it also brought settlers. A stage line through the county was established between Kelton, Utah and Boise, Idaho in 1869. A stage station existed at City of Rocks. American Falls, Idaho
American Falls is a city in and the county seat of Power County, Idaho. The population was 4,457 at the time of the 2010 census. History American Falls was a landmark waterfall on the Snake River, named after a party of American trappers whose boat went over the falls. The Wilson Price Hunt expedition in 1811 camped at the falls one night and the expedition of John C. Frémont was here in 1843. The Oregon Trail passed north of town, through the present-day reservoir. Power plants first sprang up at the falls in 1901. American Falls was the first town in the U.S. to be entirely relocated. It was moved in 1925 to facilitate construction of the nearby American Falls Dam. The old townsite sits at the bottom of the reservoir, northwest of the present city. Strevell, Idaho
Strevell is a ghost town in Cassia County, Idaho, United States, approximately north of the Utah state line and roughly south–southeast of Malta. It is located in the Raft River Valley along the former routing of U.S. Route 30S, and later the former routing of Idaho State Highway 81. Child abduction recovery Sixty years after the school in the community was closed and year after becoming a ghost town, Strevell made national headlines. On July 14, 1983 a four-year-old girl was abducted from a movie theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. Despite a massive search, the child could not be found. Two days later, the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office in Utah received a call from a biker who reported that he had found the girl sitting in the abandoned school building when he stopped for the night.
