The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that regulates communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable across the United States. The FCC maintains jurisdiction over the areas of broadband access, fair competition, radio frequency use, media responsibility, public safety, and homeland security. The FCC was formed by the Communications Act of 1934 to replace the radio regulation functions of the Federal Radio Commission. The FCC took over wire communication regulation from the Interstate Commerce Commission. WAPE-FM (95.1 MHz "The Big Ape") is a commercial FM radio station in Jacksonville, Florida. It is owned by Cox Radio and airs a Top 40 (CHR) radio format. Its transmitter is located in Downtown Jacksonville, off Gator Bowl Boulevard. The studios and offices are located on Central Parkway in Jacksonville's Southside section. WAPE's effective radiated power is 100,000 watts. WAPE is licensed for HD Radio operations but currently has no secondary channel. History In 1949, the station first signed on as WJAX-FM, the FM counterpart to WJAX. The two stations were owned by the City of Jacksonville. WAOC (1420 AM) is a radio station broadcasting a Christian talk and teaching format. Licensed to St. Augustine, Florida, United States, the station serves the Jacksonville area. The station is currently owned Good Tidings Trust, Inc. FM translator WAOC programming is also relayed on an FM translator. History 1950s 1954 WAOC begins broadcasting as WSTN on January 3. It calls itself W A One A, named after Coastal Florida highway State Road A1A. The radio studios and offices are on West Hibiscus Boulevard in Melbourne. WAOA-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 100,000 watts, the maximum power for non-grandfathered FM stations. WAMT (1190 AM) is an American radio station airing a Christian radio format. Licensed to Pine Castle–Sky Lake, Florida, United States, it serves the Orlando area. The station is an owned and operated affiliate of Family Radio. From 2018 to 2022 it was owned and operated by Relevant Radio and had a Catholic teaching format. WAMT switched to Spanish-language sports at the beginning of 2010. Previously, it featured programming from the CBS Radio Network, Fox News Radio, and Westwood One. At January 21, 2010, at 11:37 pm local time, its website address redirected all visitors to the website of then-sister station, WHOO, which carried a sports format.
