The Río Negro (Spanish for "black river") is one of the principal tributaries of the Rahue River in southern Chile. It runs from south to north draining part of the eastern slopes of Cordillera Pelada. The commune of Río Negro derives its name from the river. Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the western part of South America. It is the southernmost country in the world, and the closest to Antarctica, occupying a long and narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Rahue River
Rahue River () is a river of Chile located in Los Lagos Region. It rises at the western end of the Rupanco Lake. In its middle course, the river flows through the city of Osorno in a north-south direction. Rahue river empties into the Bueno River 40 km inland from the Pacific Ocean. Cordillera Pelada
Cordillera Pelada (Spanish for Bald Range or Barren Range) is a mountain range in southern Los Ríos Region, southern Chile. It is located along the Pacific coast and forms part of the larger Chilean Coast Range. It got its name ''pelada'' from the Spanish word for bare or bald in reference to large fires that once burned the forests on the cordillera. From about 1750 to 1943, when the land between Maullín River and Valdivia was colonized by Spain and Chile, numerous fires of ''Fitzroya'' woods occurred in Cordillera Pelada. These fires were initiated by Spaniards, Chileans and Europeans. Earlier, from 1397 to 1750 the ''Fitzroya'' woods of Cordillera Pelada also suffered from fires that originated from lightning strikes and indigenous inhabitants. Río Negro, Chile
Río Negro (, English: ''Black River'') is a Chilean city and commune in Osorno Province, Los Lagos Region. The city is located 38 km south of Osorno and 6 km west of Route 5. It has an area of 1,266 km² and a population of 14,732 inhabitants (7,204 women and 7,528 men according to census 2002). The commune is bordered on the north by Osorno and San Juan de la Costa, on the east by Puerto Octay, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, and on the south by Purranque. History In the 19th century, the commune was a property located between Chahuilco and Purranque called ''Curileufu'' by the Huilliche. The town was founded on lands donated by Jose Miguel Alderete in the year 1896. The first alcalde (mayor) was Pedro González. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Río Negro spans an area of and has 14,732 inhabitants (7,528 men and 7,204 women).
