Räucherkerze
A Räucherkerze, Räucherkerzchen or Räucherkegel (literally "smoking candle", "little smoking candle" or "smoking cone") is an incense cone burned at Christmas time in Germany and in the Czech Republic in order to create pleasant scents around the house. History The emergence of Räucherkerzen goes back to the use of frankincense in Catholic liturgy. According to tradition the manufacture of little candles in Crottendorf in the Ore Mountains was established by 1750. But it was not until the advent of modern Christmas customs in the middle of the 19th century and the manufacture of the first Räuchermännchen that they spread beyond the Ore Mountains. Materials and production The cones are made from the resin of the Frankincense tree, charcoal, potato flour, sandalwood and beech paste. Räuchermann
The ''Räuchermann'' (diminutive ''Räuchermännchen''), erzgebirgisch ''Raachermannel'' is an incense smoker, the invention of toy makers in the Ore Mountains, used to burn down cone incense, known as '' Räucherkerzchen''. The ''Räuchermann'' was first mentioned in 1850 and is now a common component in the Ore Mountain Christmas tradition. For this, an incense cone is first lit and then put on the lower half of the two-part wood figurine. The hollowed-out upper part is placed over the lighted cone, which burns down inside of the hollow figurine, the smoke leaving the mouth hole of the ''Räuchermann''. Before the ''Räuchermann'' was invented, cone incense was displayed and burnt down in the open. During Christmas time ''Räuchermänner'' are displayed together with ''Schwibbögen'' (candle arches), miners' figurines, angels, and Christmas pyramids. Sandalwood
Sandalwood is a class of woods from trees in the genus ''Santalum''. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and, unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades. Honey
Honey is a sweet and viscous substance made by several bees, the best-known of which are honey bees. Honey is made and stored to nourish bee colonies. Bockau
Bockau is a community in the district of Erzgebirgskreis in the Free State of Saxony in Germany. The community is known for growing and researching herbs. KNOX (candles)
KNOX is the trade mark of the oldest incense manufacturers in Germany. It is based in the little village of Mohorn-Grund in the borough of Wilsdruff and run by the firm of Hermann Zwetz, Chemist's. In 1865 the chemist, whose name the firm now bears, sold the incense candles, known as '' Räucherkerzchen'' as a remedy for whooping cough and asthma. Only later were the little candles used for Christmas festivities. Today about 50 tonnes of incense products are manufactured annually in 30 scent varieties in the factory premises that were newly built in 1997. The company, which continued in private hands even in East German times, also has a small museum in which there is much to discover about incense products, especially from Saxony, but also from the rest of the world. Wilsdruff () is a town in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, in Saxony, Germany, with 14,444 inhabitants (2020). It is situated 14 km west of Dresden centre. Kesselsdorf is one of its subdivisions. Near Wilsdruff there is a facility for high power broadcasting, the Wilsdruff transmitter.
