Ruzyně Prison
Ruzyně Prison ( cs, Vazební věznice Praha Ruzyně) is a prison in the Ruzyně neighborhood of Prague 6, Czech Republic. History Construction began in April 1949 to renovate a disused building near Prague–Ruzyně Airport and the prison opened by October, to house the Slánský trial victims. During the Communist era, arrested dissidents were held there, including Václav Havel Václav Havel (; 5 October 193618 December 2011) was a Czech statesman, author, poet, playwright, and former dissident. Havel served as the last president of Czechoslovakia from 1989 until the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1992 and then as ..., who later became President of Czechoslovakia. Prague 6, formally the municipal district Prague 6 (''Městská část Praha 6''), is the largest Prague district. It is located in the north-west of Prague. It covers 41.54 km² and has 100,600 inhabitants (31.12.2008). The administrative district (''správní obvod'') of the same name comprises Prague 6 and municipal districts Lysolaje, Nebušice, Přední Kopanina and Suchdol. Slánský Trial
The Slánský trial (officially English: "Trial of the Leadership of the Anti-State Conspiracy Centre Headed by Rudolf Slánský") was a 1952 antisemitic show trial against fourteen members of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ), including many high-ranking officials. Several charges, including high treason, were announced against the group on the grounds of allegedly conspiring against the Czechoslovak Republic. General Secretary of the KSČ Rudolf Slánský was the alleged leader of the conspirators. All fourteen defendants were found guilty of crimes that they did not commit. Eleven of them were sentenced to death and executed; the remaining three received life sentences. Background After World War II, Czechoslovakia initially enjoyed limited democracy.
