Rutledge is a town in Crenshaw County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the town was 467. Geography Rutledge is located at the geographic center of Crenshaw County at (31.733103, -86.309619). The city of Luverne, the Crenshaw County seat, lies along Rutledge's eastern border. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. History Rutledge began as Barber's Crossroads. It was originally settled by Jared Phelps Barber. The town was briefly named Crenshaw, but on June 10, 1867, it was changed to Rutledge in honor of Captain Henry Rutledge, Company H. 59th Alabama Infantry, CSA. Rutledge was the first county seat of Crenshaw County and held that position from March 1867 to May 1893. It was incorporated in 1871. Ann Mayes Rutledge (January 7, 1813 – August 25, 1835) was allegedly Abraham Lincoln's first love. Early life Born near Henderson, Kentucky, Ann Mayes Rutledge was the third of 10 children born to Mary Ann Miller Rutledge and James Rutledge. In 1829, her father, along with John M. Cameron, founded New Salem, Illinois. Alleged romantic relationship with Lincoln Many of the facts of her life are lost to history, but some historians believe that she was the first love of Abraham Lincoln. Sir John Guy Rutledge, KC (18 March 1872 – 15 February 1930 in Rangoon, Burma) was a British barrister, judge and colonial official in Lower Burma. Early life and career in England Born in Aughnahoo, County Tyrone, Rutledge was educated at Queens College Galway, where he served as auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society for the 1893-1894 session. He was awarded the BA degree of the Royal University of Ireland in 1893, and took his MA in 1894. He remained at QCG to study law, gaining scholarships in law for 1894-1895 and 1895-1896, and a senior exhibition in law for 1896-1897. Rutledge continued his studies in London, and was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1897. Fleming Rutledge (born 1937) is an American Episcopal priest and author. Ordained to the diaconate in 1975, she was one of the first women to be ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. Francis Huger Rutledge (April 11, 1799 – November 6, 1866) was the first Episcopal bishop of Florida. Early life Rutledge was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Hugh Rutledge and Mary (Golightly) Rutledge.Batterson, 164 Francis spent his formative years either at his family's townhouse in Charleston or on their plantation in Stateburg, South Carolina. He graduated from Yale College in 1820, and from the General Theological Seminary in 1823.Batterson, 163 Rutledge was ordained deacon on May 9, 1823, by the Bishop of South Carolina Nathaniel Bowen, and began officiating at Christ Church the same year. Edward Rutledge (November 23, 1749 – January 23, 1800) was an American Founding Father and politician who signed the Continental Association and was the youngest signatory of the Declaration of Independence. Earl James Rutledge (August 22, 1894 in Rutledge, Quebec – November 4, 1974) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1927 to 1948, initially as a Conservative and later as a Progressive Conservative after the party changed its name. Donald William Rutledge, OBE JP, 7 August 1891 – 1956, was an ANZAC who served for New Zealand during World War I in Samoa, Gallipoli and France. He was born in Dunedin, eldest son of Barret Rutledge (born Lyttelton, of Irish descent) and Elizabeth Donaldson (born in Edinburgh). Ben Rutledge (born November 9, 1980, in Cranbrook, British Columbia) was a Canadian Olympic rower and is currently a Mortgage Broker. In Seville, Spain 2002 he was a member of Canada's inaugural Men's 8+ crew to win a gold medal at a World Championship regatta. He accomplished this task two more times in 2003 and 2007 in Milan, Italy, and Munich, Germany. His Olympic results include a disappointing fifth-place finish in the men's 8+ at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
