Rutledge is a town in Crenshaw County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the town was 467. Geography Rutledge is located at the geographic center of Crenshaw County at (31.733103, -86.309619). The city of Luverne, the Crenshaw County seat, lies along Rutledge's eastern border. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. History Rutledge began as Barber's Crossroads. It was originally settled by Jared Phelps Barber. The town was briefly named Crenshaw, but on June 10, 1867, it was changed to Rutledge in honor of Captain Henry Rutledge, Company H. 59th Alabama Infantry, CSA. Ann Mayes Rutledge (January 7, 1813 – August 25, 1835) was allegedly Abraham Lincoln's first love. Early life Born near Henderson, Kentucky, Ann Mayes Rutledge was the third of 10 children born to Mary Ann Miller Rutledge and James Rutledge. In 1829, her father, along with John M. Sir John Guy Rutledge, KC (18 March 1872 – 15 February 1930 in Rangoon, Burma) was a British barrister, judge and colonial official in Lower Burma. Early life and career in England Born in Aughnahoo, County Tyrone, Rutledge was educated at Queens College Galway, where he served as auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society for the 1893-1894 session. He was awarded the BA degree of the Royal University of Ireland in 1893, and took his MA in 1894. He remained at QCG to study law, gaining scholarships in law for 1894-1895 and 1895-1896, and a senior exhibition in law for 1896-1897. Rutledge continued his studies in London, and was called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1897. Francis Huger Rutledge (April 11, 1799 – November 6, 1866) was the first Episcopal bishop of Florida. Early life Rutledge was born in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Hugh Rutledge and Mary (Golightly) Rutledge.Batterson, 164 Francis spent his formative years either at his family's townhouse in Charleston or on their plantation in Stateburg, South Carolina. In Seville, Spain 2002 he was a member of Canada's inaugural Men's 8+ crew to win a gold medal at a World Championship regatta.
