Ruthin Town F.C.
Ruthin Town Football Club is a Welsh football club, based at the Memorial Playing Fields in Ruthin, Denbighshire. Football in Ruthin dates back to 1878 when a new club was formed. In 1880 Ruthin reached the final of the Welsh Cup only to lose 2-1 to Druids. However, the club in its present form dates back to 1949 when they joined the newly re-organised Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) as Ruthin British Legion. They currently play in the Cymru North. History Ruthin Town joined division two coming runners up in their first year and gaining promotion to division 1. The following year they were runners up in the top division. The British Legion element of the name was dropped in 1953 and Ruthin Town FC was born. In 1958 the club introduced a reserve team that entered the WNL (Wrexham Area) Division 3. Ruthin
Ruthin ( ; cy, Rhuthun) is a market town and community in Denbighshire, Wales, in the south of the Vale of Clwyd. It is Denbighshire's county town. The town, castle and St Peter's Square lie on a hill, skirted by villages such as Pwllglas and Rhewl. The name comes from the Welsh ''rhudd'' (red) and ''din'' (fort), after the colour of sandstone bedrock, from which the castle was built in 1277–1284. The Old Mill, Ruthin, is nearby. Maen Huail, a registered ancient monument attributed to the brother of Gildas and King Arthur, stands in St Peter's Square. Demographics The population at the 2001 census was 5,218, of whom 47 per cent were male and 53 per cent female. The average age was 43.0 years and 98.2 per cent were white. Arthur Lloyd (Welsh Footballer)
Robert Arthur Lloyd (March 1868 – 10 January 1942) was a Welsh footballer who played as a full back. He played twice for his country, in 1891 and 1895. He later became a priest in the Church of England. Life and career The son of a schoolteacher, Lloyd was born in March 1868 in Ystalyfera, Glamorgan. When he was five, the family moved to Ruthin, Denbighshire. Lloyd attended Ruthin Grammar School, where he later taught. He was an athletic schoolboy, excelling in the high jump, and his speed earned him a place on the left wing in the school football team; only later did he settle in the full-back position. He played for amateur touring teams and for Rhyl, and it was while a Rhyl player that he was selected as reserve for Wales' match against Ireland in Belfast in February 1891. When Seth Powell withdrew, Lloyd took his place at left back in a match that ended as a 7–2 win for the hosts. William Pierce Owen
William Pierce Owen (20 November 1860 – 13 December 1937) was a Welsh professional footballer who played as a midfielder (winger, sometimes wing half) for Ruthin Town. He made a total of twelve appearances for Wales. Personal life William was the second son of Rev. Elias Owen and older brother of the younger Elias Owen, who also played for Wales. After his playing career, William became a solicitor in Aberystwyth. Club career Owen played with Ruthin Town, one of the leading teams in North Wales at that time. He was part of the Ruthin team that lost the final of the 1880 Welsh Cup against Druids.
