Ruth Abraha
Ruth Abraha, also known as Rutta Abraha (born 1989), is a singer from Eritrea. She is the lead singer of the group Wari. Career Abraha's style has been described as a combination of Helen Meles, Elsa Kidane, and Gual Ankere. As of 2011, she was dominating the Eritrean music scene. The '' Ethiopian Review'' described her as "the hottest singer in the Horn of Africa right now". Abraha's fans call her "Ruta Shikor". With a relaxed, stylish persona, she presents an ideal of modern Eritrea. Abraha was one of the performers at the 5th Eri Youth Festival, held in the SAWA Defence Training Center, Eritrea on 13–15 July 2012. Asmara
Asmara ( ), or Asmera, is the capital and most populous city of Eritrea, in the country's Central Region. It sits at an elevation of , making it the sixth highest capital in the world by altitude and the second highest capital in Africa. The city is located at the tip of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Eritrean Highlands and the Great Rift Valley in neighbouring Ethiopia. The music of Eritrea, is a diverse mix of traditional and popular styles originating from ancient to modern times. The nine major ethnic groups of Eritrea—Afar, Bilen, Hedareb, Kunama, Nara, Rashaida, Saho, Tigre and Tigrinya—celebrate autonomous music-making expressed through a rich heritage of vocalists, instrumentalists and activities within the country and throughout the international diaspora. Helen Meles
Helen Meles (Tigrinya: ሄለን መለስ; born 11 September 1971) is an Eritrean singer and actress. She has released several albums and appeared in many top-rated Eritrean films. Biography She began her musical career early, at the age of eight, when she joined the Kassala, Sudan-based Red Flowers band (ቀያሕቲ ዕምባባ). The group was formed by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF)'s local education branch. With the band, she performed in different parts of Sudan as a lead singer. At the age of 15 in 1988, Helen joined the EPLF, where she was enrolled in the organization's revolutionary school. She is known for her successful transition from ex-war combatant with the group to prominent singer. SAWA Defence Training Center
The SAWA Defence Training Center is a military academy in the Gash-Barka region of Eritrea. It is where the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF) recruits and national service conscripts are sent for basic military training. Since 2003, all local secondary school pupils have been required to attend their 12th grade at an institution proximate to the SAWA center in order ensure that they meet their mandatory national service obligations.
