Rutenber Motor Company
The Rutenber Motor Company was established as the Rutenber Manufacturing Company in Chicago, Illinois, United States, to manufacture a four-cylinder engine to the design of Edwin Rutenber. History Rutenber studied the trade of mechanics and, about 1892, built a single-cylinder engine. By 1898, he produced the first four-cylinder engine to be manufactured in the United States. A six-horsepower, single-cylinder engine was used by Frank Eckhart in his 1900 prototype car that was the seed for the Auburn which used Rutenber engines until about 1923. In 1902, Rutenber relocated his company, renamed the Western Motor Company, to Logansport, Indiana. There, the company designed and manufactured 4- and 6-cylinder engines for the emerging automobile and truck industry. The Jewell Motor Car Company of Massillon, Ohio, formerly the Forest City Motor Car Company, manufactured the Jewell brass era automobile from 1906 to 1909. Australian Six
The Australian Six was an Australian automobile manufactured from 1919 to 1925. It was a grandiose attempt to compete against imported cars from the United States, and was produced from a mixture of local and imported parts. Vehicles featured a conventional chassis layout and a choice of five bodies, locally made under the motto 'Made in Australia, by Australians, for Australia'. Most models were fitted with Rutenber Straight-6 engines and Grant Lees or Muncie gearboxes; some, however, had imported OHV Ansted engines instead. Before 1919 the factory was at the Sydney Harbour side suburb of Rushcutters Bay, New South Wales, it then moved to Ashfield until 1924. The company was forced to shut down production after some 500 cars were built; this was due mainly to high local construction costs. The car company was named for its founder, John Westcott. Nyberg was the name of a brass era American automobile built by Henry Nyberg of Chicago, Illinois, in Anderson, Indiana, and Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1911 to 1914. History Henry Nyberg was born in 1872 in Hellvi on Gotland island, Sweden. He graduated from the Technical School in Malmo, and emigrated to the United States via Canada shortly thereafter. He built his first automobile in 1898 and established Nyberg Automobile Works in 1899. He lived in Kenosha, Wisconsin until 1902, and did work for Thomas B. Jeffery Company. Nyberg Works - Chicago, Illinois In 1903, Nyberg moved his workshop to Chicago on East 18th Street. Luverne was the marque of the Luverne Automobile Company, which produced automobiles from 1904 to 1917 in Luverne, Minnesota. History Carriage makers Fenton and Edward Leicher, began in 1904 to build automobiles to order, in their coach-building factory. In 1903, they experimented with an automobile kit from A. L. Dyke in St. Louis. The first production automobile was a high-wheeler with a two-cylinder Buick engine. Rutenber and Beaver engines would be used in future production.
