Russell Mockridge
Edward Russell Mockridge (18 July 1928 – 13 September 1958) was a racing cyclist from Geelong, Victoria, Australia. He died during a race, in collision with a bus. Family The son of Robert Glover Mockridge and Aileen Claire Mockridge, née Riley, Edward Russell Mockridge (known as Russell) was born in Melbourne on 18 July 1928. Mockridge married Irene Pritchard (-2004), widely known as "Rene", in London, in 1953; they had a daughter, Melinda, who was born in Ghent, Belgium in December 1954. Career Mockridge started in 1946 by winning his first race of 40 km with Geelong Amateur Cycling Club. For his upper-class accent he was dubbed ''Little Lord Fauntleroy'', but his wins soon earned him the nickname of ''The Geelong Flyer''. He became described as 'Australia's greatest all-round cyclist for all time'. Hubert Opperman
Sir Hubert Ferdinand Opperman, OBE (29 May 1904 – 18 April 1996), referred to as Oppy by Australian and French crowds, was an Australian cyclist and politician, whose endurance cycling feats in the 1920s and 1930s earned him international acclaim. Hubert rode a bicycle from the age of eight until his 90th birthday, when his wife Mavys, fearing for his health and safety, forced him to stop. His stamina and endurance in cycling earned Opperman the status of one of the greatest Australian sportsmen. Cycling In Geelong
Cycling in Geelong, Victoria is common for recreation and competition, but less so for utility and commuting. Geelong has a discontinuous network of off-road trails and on-road bicycle lanes. Geelong's major shared riding and walking trails are the Bellarine Rail Trail, Barwon river, Bay, Ted Wilson and Waurn Ponds creek trails. A series of rider fatalities and the safety of bike riding in and around Geelong has received media and political attention. A 2016 announcement of plans for a two-way separated bike lane in central Geelong was welcomed by bike groups. Australian National Road Race Championships
The Australian National Road Race Championships, are held annually with an event for each category of bicycle rider: Men, Women & under 23 riders. The event also includes the Australian National Time Trial Championships since 2002. The Australian Championships were officially known as the Scody Australian Open Road Cycling Championships from 1999 to 2010, taking the name of their main sponsor. This changed to the Mars Cycling Australia Road National Championships from 2011 but they are more commonly referred to as ''The Nationals''. The under 23 championships were introduced in 2001. Note that these results do not currently include the senior and junior amateur road race championships that were held prior to the open era. The 1955 Tour de France was the 42nd edition of the Tour de France, taking place from 7 to 30 July. It consisted of 22 stages over . The race was won by Louison Bobet, the last of his three consecutive wins. Teams As was the custom since the 1930 Tour de France, the 1955 Tour de France was contested by national and regional teams. Eight national teams were sent, with 10 cyclists each from France, Belgium, Spain, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, and a mixed team consisting of Luxembourgian, Austrian, West German and Australian cyclists. Reginald Arnold
Reginald Athelstane Arnold (9 October 1924 – 23 July 2017) was an Australian racing cyclist. Arnold's cycling career began in 1941, when his brothers gave him a bicycle for his birthday. Despite being blind in one eye, Arnold joined Ashfield cycling club in Sydney where he made a name for himself as a capable track sprinter, winning several state titles. After World War II, Arnold competed on the European cycling circuit, and won numerous road and track races there as well as in America and Australia between 1946 and 1963. In 1952 and 1957, he was a member of the team which won the European madison championships (the de facto world title). He specialised in six-day racing and competed in 103 six-day events around the world. In 2000, Arnold was awarded the Australian Sports Medal (ASM) for being part of the world number one team for day cycle races for a number of years.
