The Rural Municipality of Wallace is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on December 22, 1883. It ceased on January 1, 2015 as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the RM of Woodworth and the Village of Elkhorn to form the Rural Municipality of Wallace – Woodworth. The former RM surrounds the Town of Virden. List Of Rural Municipalities In Manitoba
A rural municipality (RM) is a type of incorporated municipality in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Under the province's ''Municipal Act'' of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than to incorporate as a rural municipality. Manitoba has 98 RMs, which had a cumulative population of 301,438 as of the 2016 Census. This is a decrease from 116 RMs prior to January 1, 2015, when municipalities with less than 1,000 people were directed by the provincial government to amalgamate with adjoining municipalities to comply with the ''Municipal Act''. The most and least populated RMs as of the 2016 census are Hanover and Victoria Beach with populations of 15,733 and 398 respectively. Kirkella is an unincorporated hamlet in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. The community was founded on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1898. Watson Montgomery Crosby
Watson Montgomery Crosby (June 10, 1857 – March 19, 1897) served as the reeve of the Rural Municipality of Wallace and as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for the constituency of Dennis. Crosby was born at French River, Prince Edward Island, the son of Charles Crosby. His grandfather, Donald Montgomery, served as member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island and represented Prince Edward Island as a member of the Senate of Canada. Crosby moved to Manitoba in 1879 and settled on a farm near Virden. He was elected as a Councillor for the Rural Municipality of Wallace and served as Reeve from 1893 to 1896. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba representing the Constituency of Dennis in the Province of Manitoba's Ninth General Election on January 15, 1896. James Frame
James Findlay Frame (September 4, 1841 – September 28, 1923) was an American-born merchant and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Dennis from 1892 to 1895 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Conservative. He was born in New York City, the son of John Frame and Mary Findlay, both natives of Scotland, and was educated in Simcoe County, Ontario, at Williamsville Academy in New York and at a business college in Poughkeepsie, New York. After completing his schooling, Frame operated a sawmill in Glencairn until 1876. During the American Civil War, he served in the Collingwood company which protected the Canada–US border against possible raids. Frame came west to Winnipeg in 1882, soon afterwards settling in Virden. There, he established a general hardware and lumber business in partnership with G. N. Miller. Adam Gerrond McDougall
Adam Gerrond McDougall (June 5, 1836 – April 29, 1907) served as the first reeve of the Rural Municipality of Wallace. Biography McDougall was born at Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. His family moved to Liverpool where he completed his education at the Liverpool Collegiate Institution. He was employed for four years as a clerk in the British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company, which later became Cunard Line. He married Marian Laidlaw of Wavertree in October 1861. McDougall emigrated to Seaforth, Ontario where he operated a general store and produce business for 17 years. While in business in Seaforth, McDougall was appointed and served as a Magistrate for Huron and Bruce counties. He married Nellie Jones of Seaforth February 5, 1879.
