Rui Paulo Sousa
Rui Paulo Sousa (born 22 November 1967) is a Portuguese businessman and politician for the Chega party. In 2022, he was elected to the Assembly of the Republic and represents the Lisbon constituency. Sousa was born in 1967 in Castelo Branco. He graduated with a degree in business administration and worked for an IT company before founding an agricultural business with a colleague called ''Villabosque.'' He was initially a supporter of the CDS – People's Party but began his political career as a member of Alliance party. He unsuccessfully stood for the Alliance party during the 2019 Portuguese legislative election. He joined Chega in 2020 having been introduced into the party by its leader André Ventura. Chega (political Party)
Chega (; officially stylised as CHEGA!; ) is a national conservative, right-wing populist political party in Portugal formed in 2019 by André Ventura. It is characterized as being between the right-wing and far-right of the political spectrum. Its inclusion in the register of Portuguese political parties was accepted by the Constitutional Court on 9 April 2019. On the 12th of April 2019, it announced that the head of its list to the European Parliament is Ventura. Chega was part of the Basta! coalition for the 2019 European Parliament election in Portugal. Castelo Branco () is an inland city and municipality in Central Portugal. It has 34,471 inhabitants in its urban area (2021) and is the seat of the district of the same name. The 2019 Portuguese legislative election was held on 6 October 2019. All 230 seats to the Assembly of the Republic were contested. In a campaign dominated by the Tancos airbase robbery (in which former Defense Minister Azeredo Lopes (2015–2018) was accused of trying to cover-up the finding of the stolen weapons in the robbery), but also with the good economic situation in Portugal, the Socialist Party (PS) won the elections with 36% of the votes and 108 seats, a gain of 22 compared with 2015. The PS won the big districts of Porto and Lisbon, although Porto was closer than expected, and was able to gain districts from the PSD, like Aveiro and Viana do Castelo, by razor thin margins. The PS won the city of Lisbon, however with a smaller share of the vote compared with 2015, 33% vs 35%, and, surprisingly, lost the city of Porto to the PSD. André Claro Amaral Ventura (; born 15 January 1983) is a right-wing Portuguese politician and former sports pundit. He briefly worked as a senior civil servant at the Portuguese tax office. He founded the Chega party in April 2019, and was elected to the Assembly of the Republic for the Lisbon District that October.
