2019 Portuguese Legislative Election
The 2019 Portuguese legislative election was held on 6 October 2019. All 230 seats to the Assembly of the Republic were contested. In a campaign dominated by the Tancos airbase robbery (in which former Defense Minister Azeredo Lopes (2015–2018) was accused of trying to cover-up the finding of the stolen weapons in the robbery), but also with the good economic situation in Portugal, the Socialist Party (PS) won the elections with 36% of the votes and 108 seats, a gain of 22 compared with 2015. The PS won the big districts of Porto and Lisbon, although Porto was closer than expected, and was able to gain districts from the PSD, like Aveiro and Viana do Castelo, by razor thin margins. The PS won the city of Lisbon, however with a smaller share of the vote compared with 2015, 33% vs 35%, and, surprisingly, lost the city of Porto to the PSD. The Assembly of the Republic (Portuguese: ''Assembleia da República'', ), commonly referred to as simply Parliament (Portuguese: ''Parlamento''), is the unicameral parliament of Portugal. André Lourenço e Silva (born 2 April 1976) is a Portuguese politician who is the former spokesperson of People–Animals–Nature (PAN). Silva was born in the Lisbon parish of São Cristóvão e São Lourenço (now Santa Maria Maior) on the same day that Portugal's current constitution was enacted. He is a qualified civil engineer, and a vegetarian. He succeeded Paulo Borges as spokesperson of PAN in October 2014. In the 2015 legislative election, he was top of the party's list in the Lisbon District, and was the first PAN representative elected to the Assembly of the Republic. The Social Democratic Party ( pt, Partido Social Democrata, ; PSD) is a liberal-conservative political party in Portugal. José Alberto de Azeredo Lopes (born 20 June 1961) is a Portuguese politician who served as Ministry of National Defence (Portugal), Minister of National Defence from November 2015 to October 2018. Azeredo Lopes previously served as the president of the Regulatory Authority for the Media and was a law professor at the Catholic University of Portugal. He announced his resignation as National Defence Minister on 12 October 2018 amid an investigation into a Tancos arms theft scandal, theft of weapons from a military base, and was succeeded by João Gomes Cravinho on 15 October 2018. LIVRE
LIVRE (, L), previously known as LIVRE/Tempo de Avançar (, L/TDA), is a green political party in Portugal founded in 2014. Its founding principles are ecology, universalism, freedom, equity, solidarity, socialism and Europeanism. Its symbol is a poppy.
