Rubén Santantonín
Rubén Santantonín (1919–1969) was an Argentinian visual artist. Although he was active in the Pop art movement through his participation in Torcuato di Tella Institute, Santantonín's personal artwork was based more on conceptual and abstract idealism. His artworks tended to involve mixed media that would challenge the viewer's relationship with objects and materials. Career Born in 1919, Santantonín did not have any formal art education or training, but was largely self-taught. Indeed, he was largely unknown in the art world until 1943 when he entered the artistic world from the sidelines. Then, during one of his first exhibitions, at the Van Riel Gallery in 1960, he was “discovered” by two Avant-garde artists of the time, Luis Felipe Noé and Kenneth Kemble. La Menesunda
''La Menesunda'' (Lunfardo for "mayhem") is an installation art work by Argentine artists Marta Minujín and Rubén Santantonín, made in collaboration with Pablo Suárez, David Lamelas, Rodolfo Prayón, Floreal Amor and Leopoldo Maler. It was presented on May 27, 1965 at the Torcuato di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires. The work, alongside that of Niki de Saint Phalle, Christo and Claes Oldenburg, counts among the earliest large-scale environments or installations in art history. ''La Menesunda'' revolutionized Buenos Aires, attracting a large number of visitors and several news reports, and is now considered one of the greatest milestones in the history of Argentine art. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes ("National Museum of Fine Arts") is an Argentine art museum in Buenos Aires, located in the Recoleta section of the city. The Museum inaugurated a branch in Neuquén in 2004. The museum hosts works by Goya, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Rodin, Manet and Chagall among other artists. History Argentine painter and art critic Eduardo Schiaffino, was the first director of the museum, which opened on 25 December 1895, in a building on Florida Street that today houses the Galerías Pacífico shopping mall. David Lamelas
David Lamelas (born 1946, Buenos Aires) is an Argentinian artist. A pioneer of Conceptual art, he was involved in Argentina's avant-garde scene in the 1960s. Well known for his sculptures and films, Lamelas lives and works between Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, and Europe. Education and early career Lamelas graduated from the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1963. Early in his career he focused on sculpture and participated in exhibits in Buenos Aires. During the 1960s, he was one of the key members of the Instituto Torcuatro di Tella, an organization that promoted avant-garde and conceptual art. The contemporary art movement in Argentina met opposition from the government starting in June 1966 when President Arturo Umberto Illia was deposed. Kitsch ( ; loanword from German) is a term applied to art and design that is perceived as naïve imitation, overly-eccentric, gratuitous, or of banal taste. The avant-garde opposed kitsch as melodramatic and superficial affiliation with the human condition and its natural standards of beauty. In the first half of the 20th century, kitsch referred to products of pop culture that lacked the depth of fine art. However, since the emergence of Pop Art in the 1950s, kitsch is sometimes re-appreciated in knowingly ironic, humorous or earnest fashion. Marta Minujín (born 1943) is an Argentine conceptual and performance artist. Life and work Marta Minujín was born in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Her father was a Jewish physician and her mother a housewife of Spanish descent. She met a young economist, Juan Carlos Gómez Sabaini, and married him in secret in 1959; the couple had two children. The Torcuato di Tella Institute is a non-profit foundation organized for the promotion of Argentine culture. Overview 1959-1960 The Di Tella Foundation and its institute were created on July 22, 1958, the tenth anniversary of the death of industrialist and arts patron[Torcuato Di Tella.
