Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club
Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) is one of Australia's leading yacht clubs with a strong elite sailing focus located in Pittwater Newport, New South Wales. The club was formerly located at Kirribilli before relocating to its present location on Green Point, towards the southern end of Pittwater. The club is situated to the north of Crystal Bay and across from the Newport Arms Hotel. The club maintains an adjacent slipway, hardstand and other maintenance facilities on the northern shore of Crystal Bay. History RPAYC was formed at a public meeting of boatowners in Sydney on 15 October 1867. The name ''Prince Alfred Yacht Club'' was chosen in view of the intended visit of Prince Alfred of the United Kingdom, in command of , which took place in 1868. Newport, New South Wales
Newport is a suburb of northern Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region. History Prior to European colonisation, the Newport area was inhabited by the Guringai (Kuringgai) people. Shell middens from Aboriginal inhabitants are still visible both on the Pittwater side in Salt Pan Cove, as well as on the ocean facing cliff-side banks. Gordon Ingate OAM (born 29 March 1926) is an Australian sailor who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics, sailing in the Tempest class keelboat. He also finished a close second overall in the 1972 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, skippering the famous yacht ''Caprice of Huon'', beaten only by USA America's Cup sailor Ted Turner sailing a converted 12-metre, ''American Eagle''. He skippered 12-Metre Gretel II in the 1977 America's Cup but was eliminated by Sweden in the challengers' trials. Benjamin Lexcen AM (born Robert Clyde Miller, 19 March 1936 – 1 May 1988) was an Australian yachtsman and marine architect. He is famous for the winged keel design applied to ''Australia II'' which, in 1983, became the first non-American yacht to win the prestigious America's Cup in 132 years. He left school at age 14 to pursue a locomotive mechanic's apprenticeship but soon found his attention turning to sailboats. David Forbes (sailor)
David John Oliver Forbes OAM (26 January 1934 – 21 May 2022) was an Australian sailor who competed for his country at three Olympics from 1968 to 1976. Forbes won an Olympic gold medal in the Star Class at Munich 1972 alongside John Anderson OAM. His sailing career spanned over 20 years and included a 5.5m World Championship in 1970, a Sydney to Hobart race in 1974, and ten Australian championships in the Star, 5.5m, Soling, and Etchells classes. He represented Australia at three Olympic Games – 1968 Mexico City, 1972 Munich, and 1976 Montreal, and was a member of two America’s Cup challenges.
