Newport is a suburb of northern Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia, in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council. It is part of the Northern Beaches region. History Prior to European colonisation, the Newport area was inhabited by the Guringai (Kuringgai) people. Shell middens from Aboriginal inhabitants are still visible both on the Pittwater side in Salt Pan Cove, as well as on the ocean facing cliff-side banks. Newport derived its name from being a "new port" for steamers carrying passengers and cargo such as local shell lime and firewood. Bungan Castle is a medieval-style stone castle on Bungan Head built in 1919 by Adolph Albers, a German art dealer. In 1978, the area came to national attention due to the disappearance of Trudie Adams. Population In the 2016 Census, there were 9,301 people in Newport. 74.3% of people were born in Australia. The Northern Beaches Council is a local government area located in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The council was formed on 12 May 2016 after the amalgamation of Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Councils. Disappearance Of Trudie Adams
Trudie Jeanette Adams disappeared in the early hours of 25 June 1978 after attending a dance at the Newport Surf Life Saving Club, New South Wales, Australia. She left the event early before hitchhiking home, at which point she entered a vehicle on Barrenjoey Road and has not been seen since. Her disappearance is significant in that it sparked New South Wales' biggest missing person search at the time, sparked extensive and ongoing national media attention, and eventually a A$250,000 reward. Disappearance and investigation Trudie Adams' parents and ex-boyfriend, Steven Norris, reported her missing on 25 June 1978 after she failed to arrive home from the dance. Although police initially believed that the car she entered was a green Kombi van, Norris, as the main eyewitness, stated that he saw her enter a light-coloured 1977 Holden panel van. The Newport Arms Hotel, Newport Australia
The Newport Arms Hotel is a historic hotel located on the shores of Pittwater, New South Wales. The hotel was constructed in 1880 and is still a popular spot for tourists. It currently operates under the branding of The Newport, following its acquisition by hospitality group Merivale in 2015. History Charles Edward Jeannerett, an entrepreneur from Sydney first established the hotel in 1880, as well as the adjacent Newport wharf. In 1881 Jeannerett hosted the visits by Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, Prince Albert and Prince George (later to become George V of the United Kingdom, King George V), taking them on a tour of the surrounding Pittwater and up the Hawkesbury River system. Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) is one of Australia's leading yacht clubs with a strong elite sailing focus located in Pittwater Newport, New South Wales. The club was formerly located at Kirribilli before relocating to its present location on Green Point, towards the southern end of Pittwater.
