Rowing Canada
Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA), formally the Canadian Amateur Rowing Association, is a non-profit organization recognized by the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in Canada. RCA represents 15,000 registered members at all levels, including novices, juniors, university students, adaptive, seniors and masters, whether they row for recreation, health and fitness or competition. This includes clubs such as the St. Catharines rowing club, and the Victoria City Rowing Club. RCA was founded as The Canadian Association of Amateur Oarsmen in 1880 by the rowing clubs then in existence to coordinate and regulate the sport of amateur rowing. In 1974, its name was changed to the Canadian Amateur Rowing Association. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. World Rowing, also known as the World Rowing Federation (former abbreviation FISA; french: Fédération internationale des sociétés d'aviron), is the international governing body for rowing. The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC; french: Comité olympique canadien) is a private, non-profit organization that represents Canada at the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is also a member of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). Victoria City Rowing Club
The Victoria City Rowing Club is a non-profit rowing club located at Elk Lake in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. VCRC offers a variety of recreational and seasonal rowing programs and services including programs for beginners, corporate retreats, customized training camps, and private coaching. There are three classes of membership: Junior (individuals under 19 yrs), Senior (individuals over 18 yrs), and Masters (27+). CSSRA Rowing
The Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association (CSSRA) is an organization which governs high school rowing in Canada. The CSSRA has hosted the main high school rowing event, known as the CSSRA Championships (also known as "Schoolboy") since 1945. In 2020, the regatta was cancelled due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Schoolboy is held annually the first weekend of June (Friday through Sunday) in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta course. The event is open to high schools around North America. The event is the largest high school regatta in Ontario, as well as Canada. Evidence of this is that crews have been coming from as far as British Columbia (Canada), as well as the United States, and even Mexico. Leander Boat Club (Canada)
Leander Boat Club (LBC) is a community Rowing club on the south shore of Hamilton Harbour (alternatively Burlington Bay) in the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Rowing has a long history in Hamilton with races attested from the mid 1800s and formal clubs operating from the latter half of that century such as the Hamilton Rowing Club, that shuttered its doors as the bicycle craze took off around the turn of the century. The current club was established by the issue of letters patent by the Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Ontario dated 28 May 1927. Since its founding, the Leander Boat Club has produced a number of National, World and Olympic Champion rowers and crews. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat.
