Rovde
Rovde is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1905 until its dissolution in 1964. Rovde included the area on both the north and south sides of the Rovdefjorden. The northern area on the island of Gurskøya is currently part of Sande Municipality and the southern area is part of Vanylven Municipality. Rovde Church was the main church for the municipality. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Rovdane. History The municipality of Rovde was established on 1 January 1905 when the old municipality of Sande was split in two with the eastern part becoming Rovde and the rest remained as Sande. Rovde had an initial population of 610, and included the villages of Larsnes and Rovdane. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. Rovdestranda
Rovdane or Rovde is a village in Vanylven Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located along the Rovdefjorden, about north of the village of Myklebost, northeast of the municipal center of Fiskåbygd, and west of the village of Volda. The district around Rovdane is referred to as Rovdestranda. Rovde Church is located in Rovdane. History Beginning in 1838, Rovdane was administratively a part of the municipality of Herøy (see formannskapsdistrikt law). However, this changed on 1 January 1867 when Herøy was divided into two and the western part became Sande Municipality, which included the areas on both sides of the Rovdefjorden. Rovde Church
Rovde Church ( no, Rovde kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in the municipality of Vanylven in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located in the village of Rovdane, along the Rovdefjorden. It is the church for the Rovde parish which is part of the Søre Sunnmøre prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Møre. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1872 using plans drawn up by the architect Lars Tornæs from Ålesund. The church seats about 350 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to 1589, but the church was not new that year. Rovdefjorden
Rovdefjorden is a fjord (more precisely, a strait) in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The fjord runs through the municipalities of Sande, Herøy, Vanylven, Volda, Ørsta, and a tiny part of Ulstein. The eastern end of the fjord connects with the Vartdalsfjorden and Voldsfjorden and the western end of the fjord connects with the Hallefjorden. The Syvdsfjorden branches off the Rovdefjorden to the south. The fjord is bounded by the mainland to the south and the island of Gurskøya to the north. The long fjord is about wide, and it reaches a maximum depth of below sea level, near the mouth of the Voldsfjorden. The area around the Rovdefjorden was once part of the municipality of Rovde from 1905 until 1964. The area south of the Rovdefjorden is called Rovdestranda. Gurskøya
Gurskøya is an island in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island is shared by the municipalities of Sande and Herøy. The villages of Gursken, Larsnes, and Moldtustranda are located on the island. The southern part of the island was historically part of the municipality of Rovde. In 2015, there were 4,647 residents living on the island. List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so.
