Roseneck (Frankfurt Am Main)
The Roseneck was a group of Timber framing, half-timbered houses in Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main. The small square was a tourist attraction and, alongside the Five-Finger Square, was one of the most popular postcard motifs in the picturesque Altstadt (Frankfurt am Main), old town (altstadt) of Frankfurt. The Roseneck was destroyed in the Bombing of Frankfurt am Main in World War II, air raids on Frankfurt in 1944. When it was rebuilt in 1952, the properties and alleys of the ensemble were redesigned with simple residential and commercial buildings. Location The ''Roseneck'' platz was a small square south of Frankfurt Cathedral, St. Bartholomew's imperial cathedral. It was on the east side of a small street named ''Große Fischergasse'', which branched off to the south between ''Garküchenplatz'' in the east and ''Weckmarkt'' in the west as can be seen on the 1861 map. Timber Framing
Timber framing (german: Holzfachwerk) and "post-and-beam" construction are traditional methods of building with heavy timbers, creating structures using squared-off and carefully fitted and joined timbers with joints secured by large wooden pegs. If the structural frame of load-bearing timber is left exposed on the exterior of the building it may be referred to as half-timbered, and in many cases the infill between timbers will be used for decorative effect. The country most known for this kind of architecture is Germany, where timber-framed houses are spread all over the country. The method comes from working directly from logs and trees rather than pre-cut dimensional lumber. The Five-Finger Square (German: Fünffingerplätzchen) was a small place in the Altstadt (Frankfurt am Main), old town of the Germany, German city of Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main, which was formed by the meeting of five narrow streets. The Altstadt (''old town'') is a quarter (''Stadtteil'') of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is part of the ''Ortsbezirk Innenstadt I''. The Altstadt is located on the northern Main river bank.
